So I bought a 3.4 pulley from my friend. I want to install it but I have nothing done to the car. Can I put the 3.4 pulley on the stock engine? It's a 1997 with a little less than 89,000 miles on it. I've heard different things from different people and I really want to know what the best thing to do would be. Can I install it or do I need to do some other mods first? If I need more mods first what mods do I need and what would the best order be? If I can stick the 3.4 pulley on the stock engine with no other mods then is there somewhere I can find the step-by-step tutorial so I don't screw it up? Also, I've read that I can keep the stock pulley belt and other people say I need to install a smaller belt.

Does anyone know FOR SURE what I can and can't do?

    Thank you

For Sure, if you put that 3.4 on a stock car you WILL chip a piston (or a couple)

    Read this

    http://www.grandprixforums.net/showthread.php?t=67580

You will need Headers (or a PLOG and Downpipe) and a tune.

Maybe if you lived at 6,000 feet you could put a 3.4 on there and leave the rest stock.

That's what I thought. I wanted to be positive though because I've been hearing different things. I do live in Utah but that's not quite 6,000 feet haha
On that note, what's the next smallest pulley besides stock that I can put on without other mods? I've heard 3.5 but I've heard that you need mods for that too. I'm not trying to be cheap but I'm pretty curious. I don't want to give up the 3.4 pulley I have, I want to use it I'm just an impatient person and broke haha

Also, what headers and intake do you recommend for someone who will never have that much money? :P

For someone who doesn't have much money, don't mod your car. Seriously. Something breaks and you dont have money to fix it, it sucks.

    Though

are basically the standard nowadays. I've personally run 3 sets and couldn't be happier for the price.

Keep the stock pulley until you have something to scan and measure for KR dropping pullies isn't just a simple solution unless you want to grenade your motor. Stock cars have knock with the stock pulley and everytime you drop the pulley size the KR is more and more deadly. Read the link Squid posted.

We all want to put awesome go fast parts on our cars.

If you put that 3.4 on there stock, you will be slower than on the 3.8 pulley.

When the PCM sees knock, it pulls timing to try and adjust for it. Less timing, less power.

Be patient. Put the headers on, make your own intake, get either a canned tune (intense, ZZP, Wbodystore, or Overkill) and put the 3.4 on. OR put the 3.4 on and get a custom tune.

Mostly cause GM wasn't cool enough to put an intercooler on from the factory.

Smaller pulley doesn't always mean it's going to be faster, just because it makes more noises.

Let it flow before throwing more air in it.

    Simple concept.

Thanks for all your input. This really helps. I bought this car knowing I could mod it and eventually I want to start working on that. Knowing where to start really helps.

    Not a problem.

Feel free to ask questions, but please do try and search first, and if you question isn't answered, fire away.
