Ok so I bought my first 2000 gp gtp in September and instantly fell inlove, mechanically it's perfect but has body issues, rust under gas door, rotting rockers, rusting strut towers, bent front apron from an accident by the previous owner, and new to the list is a huge dent between the driver door and rear tire from being hit by a guy who ran a red (he then asked me to pay out of pocket for his damages lol)

But being that I'm already a lot of money into it I decided to fix everything and make it mint again. Then my buddy told me "you're a stupid dumb idiot, you didn't put money into the car, you put it into the motor. Just swap that s#!t!!" So my question is; if I buy this 2002 4 door gt with a 3800 n/a that has a mint body and interior but has a rod knock and bad trans for $450, could I just swap the entire front cradles? I have access to tow trucks and wreckers which make me think full cradle swap would be easier. But can I just swap? Is it plug and play? What should I look out for? What else should I consider? Could I do the swap into an impala? Or any other wbody? Any suggestions? And before anyone says just drive it until I dies an buy another, I can't, I don't have it in me to drive a Beaten car lol I've done multiple searches but can't find any direct answers so any help would be awesome!

    Thanks in advanced guys!

Here's pics before the accident if anyone wanted to see.

if i were you id buy that car for 450 and swap your engine and tranny with the cradle like you said. you need the pcm. and harness from the gtp. it should all hook right up pretty much.

So bcm, ecu, and PCM are all plug and play? No re tuning needed for any reason? Also I'm guessing I'm going to have to swap my DIC, easy?

you take the harness and the pcm from the gtp, then put it in the gt.

you will need to wire the perf shift button to work but other then that it should be pretty much plug and play. theres a how to out there for that.

in this pic you can see the engine harness is still on the engine and tranny? you can pretty much pull it by un hooking it from the car, then put the new engine and harness in the new car.

What does wiring the performance shift button involve? I know how to do the rest just read a few things about needing tunes and BCM reprogramming to the different VIN and what not so I wasn't sure. Thanks for the info though, I'll hopefully be starting the swap the weekend before Christmas since I have that whole week off work. I'll start a thread and post the best pics I can, my garage is small and poorly lit so quality isn't going to be good lol

you'll have to look for the how to for the perf shift button, you need the shiftier handle from the gtp and then wire it to the pcm harness. the gt's not wired for it.

i read it once. dont seem all that bad, i just dont remember the whole thing. may have something to do with a wire to the back of the cluster too. you maybe able to swap the cluster as well.

and being where you live im sure theres a local who could change the vin number in the pcm to match the new cars with a tuner program.

So the vin in the PCM does have to be changed? And I'm defiantly swapping the the cluster, the donor body gt I'm getting shows 200k+ mine has 89,000 and the trans was rebuilt about 7-8k ago

if you change the cluster document it with a sticker on the door or something, and if you ever sell it disclose it, or you can get in trouble. big trouble. its miles were recorded when it was last titled.

the vin needs to be changed to be legal for one, and to pass inspection if you have that.

No inspections here. and mileage is not recorded during titling unless requested I believe, none of my titles have ever had Milage on them and I've never been questioned about it at Secretary of State. But there's no problems besides legality if I don't change the vin on the PCM? I can live with that lol

You dont need to do anything with the pcm/vin. Some 01.5+ cars require a pcm relearn but that is something anyone can do to enable sync your BCM and PCM.

parts cars are always nice to have if you own a gtp.

Going from a 2 door to a 4 door is gonna suck tho. And be prepared to start replacing suspension parts if that GT has 200K miles

I actually prefer 4 door oddly enough, I like the 2 door because I always have the "I can't drive no room for you in my backseat" excuse but I tend to have to carry/move a lot of bigger things in my car and trunk is reserved for systems lol and also I've found four doors are way better in the snow with the extra rear weight and here in michigan that's a HUGE PLUS and I would love to keep the gtp around for parts but I have no space for it. but thank you for the PCM info, I just have to find a clean body, the one I was looking at got sold :/

I think it's probably mostly in your head as far as the difference in handling in the snow. Being a FWD car more weight towards the back isn't going to help either but the difference between a 2 door and 4 door is only like 25lbs at most.

I'd just drive the car thru the winter if its rusting and then wait for a good deal on a rust free body to come along. (Just what i'd do tho)

I found a rust free 2000 gt four door that the kid did the front cradle swap to his 98..he's selling my the full body minus the cradle for $200 this week. And yeah I know it's front wheel drive but the rear end of mine (and 4-5 other people I've talked to) like to get loose an spin you around while taking even slight road curves even at low speed. It's annoying lol spun out 3 times already in the past 2 weeks while driving VERY carefully and it's always the rear end that breaks loose.

If your rear end is kicking out you need better tires on the back.

Our impala does that too. My car doesn't. The impala has winters on the front and all seasons on the back, that was always my explanation for it.
