So yesterday, i started hearing a wierd noise that i thought was alternator whining.

Moving on to today... I went for a drive to get to school. Car was making the same crunchy whine. Half way to my school i hear a loud bang. Didnt think much of it because i thought it was the pot hole i just hit. 5 Minutes later I noticed my voltage slowly start dropping to 12 amps from 13. Kept driving like an idiot... Then noticed my temp at 250 so immediately pulled over. Check under the hood and i was greeted to this:

So that explained amp drop and almost overheating.
Waited around for a friend to drop off some tools and got to work thinking all i need to do is replace the belt.

    WRONG....

I instead find something way less explainable and well something i dont know what to do about (powersteering pulley was just resting ready to fall off):

Question is... Do i need a new power steering pump and pulley?

Or is there a different solution... Please help im lost and confused of what happened or what to do.

    Sincerely,
    Denis

you need a Gm p/s pump pulley puller to get your pulley off that shaft, then put that pulley on the new pump.

easy enough job now that you can see the 2 bolts that hold the pump on lol

you'll want to jack the front pass side up, take the wheel off, then un hook the 2 lines under the pump, have a pail to catch the fluid that will pour out. then take the pump off, swap the pulley, then put the new pump on.

the pumps runs 40 bucks or so, and the puller you can rent. dont even think about using another puller, the GM p/s pulley puller is all you can use. or you'll be looking to buy a new pulley for the pump.

I'm gonna give this a "yup, you need a ps pump" and jump on the bandwagon. Cause..that isn't supposed to look like that.

Next time you hear a noise..I'd suggest checking it out. Might have saved yourself a belt.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

@FFDP.... Figured that out once i looked at a new one at parts store.

@scotty... You just made me lol! "pail for fluid". Classic. pump was dry.( yes i know this is probably what caused pump to fail)

@scotty / @Gingseng... Exactly what i did. Rented from parts store.

@billboost I thought the noise was just my alternator whining so didn't think much of it... Obviously bad decision. shouldnt have driven it.

    ***Update***

    Got up early this morning....
Went out to gas station to fix otto the black turd.
Replaced pump and new serpentine belt.
Filled pump with fluid...(which he dumped out 16 ounce in about 30 seconds)
    Got a jump.
    Drove it home....
AND now have a new problem....

    NEEEDDDD HEEEELPPPP AGAIN!

***NEW PROBLEM ( Sorry dont want to make a whole different thread and fill the forum with addition unnecessary forum posts)***

    Symptoms:
-Speedometer stays at 0. (so does the HUD)
-Shifts felt harsher even without performance shift (Mind you this transmission only has 1k miles on it)
    - DIC isnt tracking mpg.

Obviously this all caused by one thing... Problem is i dont know what thing and where said thing is. Please state possible causes for me to diagnose. Thank you in ahead of time!

you said got a jump, drive it home. how long was the battery dead for, was it stone dead? you battery could be to weak or you have a bad cable to the battery.

when you take the battery out, or un hook it for over 30 minutes, or have a stone dead battery, the pcm resets, the trans will re learn how you drive, may take a day of driving for it settle down.

It was unplugged for about two days.

Would this settling down also include self fixing the speedometer? The speedo is my main concern...

I wonder if when the pump went and send the belt everywhere if the wire or connetor to the VSS sensor on the trans got hit.

^^ This, check the plug going into the output of your transmission.. there's a sensor with a 2 wire plug going into it. I bet the belt or something jerked that wiring or hit the sensor causing a short or something...

See sensor #10 in the pic below... the wiring harness drops down behind the alternator IIRC. While you are under there check to make sure it did not unhook anything else.

the belt dont look like it broke a apart, it also looks to have stayed in place via those pics he posted.

im still on the bad ground or weak battery causing the dash problems.
