The only thing that would make the newer style one not leak is a better gasket or the fact that it's just newer. You might be thinking about oil pans, the newer aluminum oil pans dont have the issues of the stamped steel ones.

Yeah I literally just did my rear about 2 hours ago on my 03 GTP. When looking for gaskets i found that they fit pretty much all years; so i'd say they are the same other than being a different color.
