this is simple, do a compression test. pull the plugs look at them. oh, put the stock pulley back on if its not a chipped piston. or you will chip one.

Tick tick BOOM!
Seriously I suggest your throw the stock 3.8 pulley back on before you find yourself replacing the motor
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
I have heard from this site that you can do a 3.4 pully without doing any mods and I have done a few
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
And the thing I find strange is it only started doing this after I put the thermostat in I'm gonna put the stok one back Monday and see if it goes away
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
3.4 on a stock Gen V powered 3800? Needs more than a t-stat man. No wonder you chipped pistons.
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
Lol I couldn't begin to tell you how many websites and forums (includind this one)say you can put a 3.4 on a stock car and like I sai I have a cold air intake and ubend delete flow master mufflers and platinum plugs with bosh wires so its not completely stock and I no I did not blow the motor it's funny that I come on here for answers where everyone is supposed to be so smart about these vehicles but the first thing people start saying is a blown motor

All you've done is a CAI and a tune up.... Do more research friend. May not be completely trashed, but you've set yourself up for failure if you beat on her bad enough.
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
I've been researching the same basic thing, whats needed for a 3.4 pulley. I haven't seen anything about only needing a U bend delete and a CAI. Most of what I have seen has said, CAI, headers, new down pipe, a tune, a 160 T-stat and colder plugs at minimum.

Not on this site. You need headers to run a 3.4
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
See? Lol... put the 3.8 back on.

ok, you really need to read a lot more, put that damn stock pulley back on, then GET RID OF THEM PLATINUM PLUGS!!! <<<i bet 100 bucks this is why you car runs like crap right now. put iridium plugs back in. you can thank me later.
Get headers. then put the pulley back on, then have it tuned via the pcm. cause if the piston aint chipped, it will be soon.
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
Yea you need to do some more research you cannot just throw a 3.4 pulley on and expect good things. The mods you have aren't really mods and will not support the kind of drop. Get headers and first and foremost scan scan scan! Every car is different what works for one Joe might not work for the next.
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
Some websites are different when I initially did the pully I had a lot of ping but then I did the ubend delete plugs and wires and intake and it was gone I only did the thermostat becouse the summer that's hopefully coming soon but I have read that with the stat you are messing with the computers intelligence to monitor the tempiture of the vehicle and makes it run rich so in WOT its getting too much fuel and is basically flooding itself out
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
I have a budy who has a programmer I just have to buy the software

160* is way to cold, only got with 180* at the coolest, I've decided to stay with stock. I don't think that you have read to much. 160* is where the car starts detecting knock so you might be hurting yourself even more because the car wasn't hot enough to start detecting knock. Go back to stock pulley, plugs, and thermostat.

Tuner or programmer? Just because he's a programmer gives him no place to tune a car. If you thought you had to read for modding, there's more knowledge for starting tuning.

No one on here should have told you you can run a 3.4 on a stock motor. Some people chip pistons on stock motors stock pullies. You need to run headers or a plog dp combo. You need to get some copper core plugs 605's or 104's autolite. Also get a 180* thermostat
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
I have the 180 thermostat that's were the problem started everything before the tsat was perfect and I'm not sure what my buddy has but he said we could drive down the road and set the car up through the computer so I guess it's a tuner idk but thanks for the help I'm gonna put the old stat back in and if it cures the problem then I'm gonna do the 104s and when I get a lil more money try and get the headers
Re: Misfire and possible chipped piston?
the t stat's not the cause,(put it back to stock 195 anyway) its the plugs your using, they are no good. change them, then pray it runs better, cause if it dont, its a piston.
get copper plugs or iridium plugs.
