You change the oil right?
So you're partially concerned about the longevity of your engine right?

Lol, I think some are trying to say... Do all the routine maintenance stuff and then some, maing sure the vehicle has a solid baseline to build from and then make a plan of where and how far you want to go with modding, HP, and $$$ wise... It's the best route and will serve you well in the long run. Without making sure the ar is solid mechanically prior to modding can be... Disappointing. Modding without a road map will cost you lots of $ and aggravation as you spend twice and do twice the work to arrive where you want to be.
That said... After the maintenance, the fist thing I'd recommend is headers. Then tune, then upgrade intake, porting the S/C and TB, retune, then drop pulleys while actively scanning for knock. Remember the golden rule...
Fast/Reliable/Cheap
You can only have two of these, be careful with your choice!
Regards
Always worry about knock. These cars knock stock. Pulleying down causes more knock. The smaller the pulley the more detrimental it can be to your motor. Get a scangauge to monitor knock before you end up on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.
Here is the short list of power more:
Intercooler and pulley.
Cam and pulley.
Heads and pulley.
Or any combination of the above.
Or a turbo conversion.
They all require a significant investment, and will test the integrity of your stock transmission. You can easily make it last, but if you beat on it at all, which I would assume you would, given you're interested in more power in the first place, it simply won't last.
Figure that into your budget in the course of a couple years.
Unless you plan on making some power, blowing something up, and bailing. Don't feel bad about doing that either, many have done that too.
Next mod IMO should be a set of 1.9's rockers. Fairly cheap upgrade and not too deep into the motor. Cam install is much more involved.
They're $280 from ZZP, $100-180 used. Helps with the top end, but they're not worth the investment. Had 1.9 rollers, not worth it IMO.
Given the age of your factory springs, you'd want new L76 springs or at the very least new factory replacement springs.
$50 for a set of L76 springs and $150 for 1.9's (have a set I could sell you) and will for sure help with an KR if it's present. So for $200 and a little time and effort is totally worth it. Gives you more power on the top end where as a cam will help more throughout the entire powerband.

Yes. Get a quality custom tune, if you want to have the safest and most powerful tune you can that is.
Thought I would suggest a few things, unless the previous owner did these, might want to knock these off the list.
SC oil change
PCV
Check vacuum hoses
Check Belt (both)
Trans Pan Drop with new filter
Check Coolant Elbow/s
Coolant flush
Plugs and Wires
Fuel Filter
Clean MAF
Clean Throttle Body
Try to keep up on these so any new mods will last. Oh and start a Members ride thread to post pics of your Gold Ride.
