I have 2002 gtp stock. Noticed some smoke behind me in the mirror a quarter mile or so from home. When i came to a stop sign i noticed the smoke coming out the hood. Pulled in the drive and looked under the running car. Oil was squirting out at a very rapid pace on the drive. I turned the car off right away. No more oil came out after i turned it off. There was like a trail of oil coming down the road behind the car.
Just wanting to get some ideas about what may have happened here. i assume its something with oil pressure. Like the oil pressure sending unit maybe. My plan tomorrow is to put oil in it and turn it on. See where its shooting out at. It leaked all 4 quarts in a quarter mile by the way. Its also been leaking a tiny bit for a month now on the drive from somewhere.

id have to think thats the oil pressure sensor has blow out on you.

start the car turn the wheels to the right, and look from behind the pass side wheel, at the oil filter, just past the filter is a sensor. with the car running oil can pour out of the plug of this sensor.

ive blown 3 of them so far.

You know if i wasn't a very observant person I could have killed my old GTP. Another mile without oil would have been all she wrote. Scotty your lucky to beak three and get away with the motor in one piece. I wish this car had a oil pressure gauge.
At least i found out where my minor oil leak has been coming from. Im going to just replace the sending unit before i put oil in it and start it up again.

i bought mine leaking, day 2 it let go on me.

so after that i was paranoid about it, caught it leaking soon after each new one. i used pep boys and a auto zone brand, both failed in 30 days.

i now have a brass plug blocking the sensor hole now.

the easy way to change that it to take the pass wheel off and reach in with a pair of channel locks. nothing else fits in there well.

when you put the new one in, only snug it up good. the sensor has tapered threads, it gets fatter the deeper it goes in. you dont want to split your filter housing.

why would you throw a sending unit at it before you check to see where its leaking? put oil in it... put it on jack stands crawl under car and have a friend start the car for you. it might be something dumb... like a lose oil filter... thats what id do atleast before i spend my money on something that might not be leaking

Well we will hope for something dumb. Although the oil filter was the first thing I checked. Its tight. That doesn't mean its not leaking though. But, your right. I need to fully verify the leak before I spend any money on it.

just turn the wheels like i said, with the car running look at the sensor, it will pour out at a idle if its bad. ( like maple syrup) the wires and plug and the axle will also be coated in oil.

some how im sure you've had a small oil leak on the pass side of the car for quite some time now.

oh and put some oil in it, your engine only holds 4.5 quarts, so add some lol

the filter might be double gasket. and whoever did the oil change cranked the filter down. i would check it with the car running on jack stands and just have a friend turn it on and then shut it off so its not spraying oil everywhere. but before you start it.... CLean the area with brake clean and a rag so you can see better

It's been leaking. I wasn't sure where it was coming from though. I had the idea of the oil pan gasket until today. The sending unit is a much easier fix. If that's what the diagnosis is of course.

I will check that out. It going to be very evident where the leak is at start up. It was pretty scary when i quickly peeked under the running car to see soo much oil flowing out. There wasn't like a "Oh let me see where its dripping from while i got it running." It was more like, "Holy ****. Turn it off before the motor spins a bearing or something."

mine all started out as small leaks, then opened up like a flowing river, i lost 3 quarts the first time. cars were passing me on the highway beeping with oil all over their windshields lol and i was killing bugs out the back big time, coated the whole underside of the car to the rear bumper.

its a quick easy check to see if its leaking. a good flash light helps a ton, even during the day.

Sounds like my experience. lol Kinda looked like the John Candy movie Uncle Buck with his smoking car. Best part is that i had just zoomed past some guy for driving like a moron. He was probably saying, " Karma."

It was the sending unit. On a side note. Autozone is crazy to want $35.99 for Mobile 1 5 quart jug. When it cost you $24.99 at Walmart.
