Will the radiator overflow cap being cracked really cause your car to overheat because of the way the cooling system works in these cars?????

No, it shouldnt. The cap has two seals on it. The first seals the cap to the radiator, the second seals off the overflow from the radiator. When the pressure reaches a certain point the second seal (held in place by a spring) will give and allow coolant to flow into the overflow.

So if you are overheating, there are other issues to chase down.

Actually, if you are talking about the actual overflow tank cap, that wouldn't cause the car to over heat, the tank has a vent in it to relieve pressure. The standard radiator cap on the radiator neck is supposed to relieve pressure on the coolant system.

So for some reason the cap on my reservoir doesn't have a vent and the crack in the lid caused air pockets in the radiator causing it to push out the coolant causing my car to overheat this is the explanation i got from a couple mechanics if this doesn't sound right to you guys please let me know so i can get the problem resolved before it becomes something more serious thanks for the help everyone

That is the same problem I am having with my grand prix. If the cap is cracked or busted in any way it will overheat! Its causing it to spit out of the overflow wherever the crack is at.
