ive only heard of feeding string into the cylinder via the plug hole, then hand turning the engine and driving the piston up to hold the valves in, cant see that being easy.
Not to be a debbie downer here but, If it were me i wouldnt even attempt it without air. All it takes is one valve out of twelve to drop down into the cylinder and guess who's doing a head gasket...... if you dont have a air compressor maybe you can borrow a air pig from someone and use that??
Your best bet would be to remove the heads...unless you can borrow a compressor or keep the stock valvetrain for the vs cam.
Just go buy a cheap air compressor. It won't take a lot of pressure to keep the valves closed.
Is it safe to run the stock valves with the vs cam untill I can get a chance to install the 90# springs?
I've done the spring/rope. It's not so bad.. not ideal, but not great. Just make sure you turn the motor to hold the valves with teh spring/piston. If not.. call me and I'll tell you exactly what tools are needed to fish a valve back up into the guide.
First time is always a learning experience
