I bought a clean 98 regal gs with a rod knock. I found a real good deal on a complete engine, I did a compression test because the engine is out of the car and all cyls where great the last cyl had a little anti freeze in it.

Looking at the piston it didnt seem like it had been doing this when running. The oil cap had no moisture at all around, a 100,000 mile engine the rockers and oil look very clean. I have never heard it run I want to just install it and go from there I am a tech so I don't mind pulling the blower later if it needs it.

I wanted some opinions on doing this? or tearing into it now? Besides the LIM and elbows are there anything else i should look out for?

I am also going to mildly mod the motor later and was wondering if I should bypass any of the pulleys AC or smog pump or anything else with the engine out that would be a little easier?

I am going to put plugs wires and fuel filter, flush the cooling system, etc and change the trans fluid and filter as soon as its driveable.

Is there any gains in blocking off the EGR or SC bypass what other cheap mods can I do?

I have read the safely mod L67 article. I plan to make my own CAI and doing my own exhaust do I need the 3" downpipe or can i build something?

Our shop has a bender I dont really have the money for the headers and know that would be best, I am not going to run any cat either way.

Are there any good tuners that I can buy like SCT or Diablosport to get this dialed in or will I need Hptuners or what?

Has anyone ever dealt with JET software the kit is 375.00 so that is why I am curious. I plan to run a medium pulley and maybe high ratio rockers and not go into the engine internally(hopefully).

Just would like some input and what about oil I heard run 5w30 instead of 10w but why and what kind do you guys use? I have always used dino oil and yes i am a member at BITOG. Any advice anyone could give I would appreciate it.

LIM job is pretty straight forward.

You dont NEED a 3in dp, but in order to drop a pulley size ever, you do need more exhaust flow, as in a plog/downpipe or headers.

There are no gains from blocking off the BBV and if you delete the EGR you will get 4 engine codes and might notice 1-2 mpg loss on the freeway. A custom tune can bring that back though.

The only tuner programs that work for our cars is DHP and Hp tuners.

Jet and diablo will not work.

As for the oil, its your choice. I run 10w30 in the summer and a mix in the winter, so like 7w30.
