LIM gasket change and coolant splash

I have changed many intake gaskets in the past without a lot of issues but this L67 takes the cake.

How do you guys pull the lower without splashing coolant into the oil? I drained the radiator with the upper bleed valve open until nothing would come out before I cracked the intake bolts loose. When I broke the manifold free and started out of the engine bay all I could hear was water falling all over everything.


Oh that and the gas dump when the injectors decide to stay in the head... That was fun too.

These cars are just a ton of fun to work on.

What damage is done? Will most of the water come out in the oil change before starting?

Wash valley down with oil really good. I avoid that problem by using a wet vac to suck it all up before pulling off the lim.

yeah, go buy like 10-12 quarts of cheap ass oil.

Dump 1 down the valley to wash it away, drain the oil, fill with new oil, run for a few minutes, dump it again, new filter and new oil and thats pretty much it.

Yeah just wash it down with some oil. 3800s are cake for intakes.

to drain the fuel rails, pull the relay for the pump and start it up, and let it die. they'll be pretty dry then.

yup, learned that trick at school, it is proper procedure when doing any work on the fuel system, pull relay, run car until it dies.

Hence why you are complaining to us about coolant and gas in your motor. Ask yourself, is the hard headedness helping or making things tougher on you? Maybe it takes something like talking about this to consider changing a little to make things easier on yourself.

The hard headedness comes from being an engineer and being behind on everything in life lately. I got it in my head that this would be a somewhat difficult job and have been dragging it out over many days now because of other things in my life outside of my job. Yes I wanted to vent some. I saw there was a post on here about the install of this gasket a couple weeks ago so I knew I had the reference material if I got stuck. I didn't just go completely blind at this. I just was surprised/well pissed by the amount of coolant that came rolling out of the intake after the radiator was already drained.

I vaguely recall removing the lower rad hose and coolant elbows.

After that, there wasn't much coolant to speak of in the LIM. A little bit in the heads, but not much in the LIM.

To keep residual water in the intake manifold/block from falling after romoving the intake manifold, I always use my SEARS wet/dry vacuum to suck out the water from the thermostat housing (thermostat removed), this gets the water out from those little pockets that are left over. Make sure the paper filter is rmoved from the wet/dry vacuum before sucking water.
