I been thinking about camming my gp for a while now. And I'm very close to doing so. However, my roommate who happens to have a cammed GP recommends me not to. He claims about how crappy the fuel economy is (thought his is tuned for the track, not the street), but I hear of others with cams with normal or even improved highway economy and this being their daily driver. Then he spoke on the cost saying I'll spend another $300 on installation parts outside of the cam price. Please fill me in with the pros and cons of this so I can come to a better decision. Thanks for reading.

If your buddy can't get BETTER MPG's after a cam/WB tune...then he can't tune well.

    I gained MPG's...I saw 30+ on the HWY with a Thrasher Setup...pump 93 and 3.29 gearing.

I'd always cam over rockers anyways...

    Wideband.

I DD'd it for over 40k on an XP/Headers/LS1TB/3.2" and whatever setup.

Took it off DD status, built motor/ported heads...bigger cam, etc.

Got even better MPG's after the larger cam. City driving, not really sure...didn't do much of it.

Ok, thats similar to the set up im goin with...I doing my top swap over spring break (next week) and have a set of SLP headers I'm putting in too. Cuz its top swapped, not sure what pulley size im gonna run yet, but definitely looking for a TB, new or used. Then I figured after a month or so of being top swapped, I would cam her. But it seems like my roommate is trying to scare me out of camming.

    Where'd the GenV come from?

If it's a GenIII, headers and an XP...should be able (keyword) to get away with a 3.4"...

to each their own... If youre not gonna go too far with your car, early on, a cam wont net you much more power than some 1.9s.So, if your main goal is mid 13s (ish), that's easily achievable on a stock cam and rockers (trust me) ...

However, dont let someone scare you out of a cam by telling you rockers are more "reliable" than a cam because thats just silly. Done right and tuned properly, anything can be reliable....

Lol @ 1.9's making close to same power as a cam.

A cam should put me in high 12's...thats what a lot of guys are running with cams and the right tune and launch...I ran mid 13's with my gtp with a 3.4 setup and headers and TB (13.5 at best).

    ummmm no?^^^^

unless you go with something like an xpz, on a stock car there isn much difference in a street cam and rockers performance wise...

cams shine more down the road WAY more than rockers ever could and there is no denying that but early on they may only net you a few more ponies and torque... not much more...

Stock cam is no good past ~5700. Even with 1.9 rollers

^^^ what point are you trying to even make with that comment?

of course they arent, but on a nearly stock motor neither is a cam...
