Thread: 04 gtp clunking sound HELP!!!

Ok so i have a 04 gtp with 100,xxx miles on it and i had been hearing a kinda vibrating grinding sound and on the way home last night when i got off the e way i heard a loud knocking sound i thought it was a rod knocking so fiirst i took the s/c belt off noise still there then took the other belt off noise gone ok so i just went outside put my hand on the crank pulley and it moves back and forth so i was thinking it was just the crank pulley soooo a friend tells me it could be the whole crank how could i tell if its the whole crank please tell me its not cause with the belt off its quiet somebody help if u can heres a few vids

Digging into it SMH thats what i didnt want to do is the crank pulley and the harmonin balancer the same thing?

Yep, same thing. If the balancer rubber is bad then the pulley will wobble. Need to get that replaced ASAP before it tears something else up. If it's truly that bad then it is possible in a worst case scenario to snap the crank. Not saying its inevitable, but seen it happen before.

If you're crank was broken to the point where you could move it the motor would not run as it would be broken at one of the rod journals.

how hard of a job it is to replace it and i cant find the part NO WHERE in my city only online i really needed it fixed asap the dealer want 212 and it wont be here till next

Pretty much. The "right now" factor is going to cost any way you try to get it. Rock Auto may be able to get it relatively cheap, or maybe consider hitting up a junkyard in your area and see if they have a compatable one.

As far as replacing it, IIRC all you need is a balancer puller and the correct size bolts, which if the balancer on this year is like the previous, it takes a bolt length and thread pitch that does NOT come with your normal puller. I had to buy my bolts and washers at Lowe's to replace the one on my Bonneville, which also removed the one from my 00 GT. Pull the pass. tire off, remove the wheel liner cover and the crank bolt should be staring right at you. Removing it may be a pain as it's torqued to something like 120 ft/lb IIRC. I got mine loose w/ an air powered impact. I reused my crank bolt even though its a TTY bolt and no issues so far. Just be sure to put some red loctite on it and torque it to the proper specs. Oh, and also be sure that when you reinstall it that the crankshaft key lines up properly w/ the balancer or you will be in for more than you planned on.

thanks for the info how hard is it to take the fender well out im looking and it looks like its gonna be harder to take it out than the balancer

You may not have to take the entire liner out. If you take a look on the inside edge where it covers the balancer there may be a little flap that is held in by plastic clips that you can remove. That would allow access to the crank bolt area w/o removing the entire liner.
