Was surfing around the internet and came across the L67. Would that be a good swap for my 96 se?

A few people have done it I'm not sure what all is needed or if everything will bolt right up but it'll be a lot faster lol
Sure it would be easier, but it also wouldn't be this car. I've grown quite fond of it and already know what's wrong with it. Id much rather not play another guessing game to get everything running properly. I do plan on buying a car with it factory installed, but only as a donor car. My grams got me this car before she passed so I want to keep it for sentimental value, I just wanna beef it up a bit.![]()
youd need a decent amount of money. youd need to swap your current transmission as it WILL NOT hold up to any abuse. you would need to do a bit of custom fab, including cutting the firewall for the exhaust, you would need to know how to tune because i think the l67 cars had different gearing. someone on here did it to either his lumina or his monte. i cant seem to find the thread.
Its been done a few times so the info is out there. You'll have to run the wiring harness from the L67, maybe the tranny, tune it, etc. It's involved but not impossible. If your car has a 5 speed I say keep that.
buddy of mine did this swap with his 96 gtp, has it running now, could be faster then a 97-03 generation because it is lighter
Ok i just recently (october 2011) did a swap on my 1996 Monte. your 1996 GP SE is the same frame as my car. we will share a lot between the models. this is what you will need to find.
a 98/99 Monte Z34 wire harness and PCM. it is your choice at this point to run a l67 or a topswapped l36.
option 1) L67. use the Z's harness and get the swap harness kit. it will add the correct MAP connector and the BBV connector. and have the PCM programed to run the l67. you will need the axles from a 98/99 Z also to complete this swap in addition to the passanger side inner HD axle as the pass side one needs to be a hybrid to fit on a 1.5 gen Wbody. 97+ Gp and 00+ MC are 2nd gen Wbody.
option 2) L36 topswap. you can use a l36 and 4t65e with the 98/99 Z harness and the stock 98/99 Z axles. you will not need the swap harness as you will not be runnng the solonoide for the BBV and will use the stock MAP from the l36. the PCM will need to be flashed to run the topswap.
if you are going to run speed daddy headers, i have pictures of my modified fire wall and can get you links to another of what needs modified. i cut a 6" by 8" section of fire wall out of the car and then cut notchs in the remain wall to bend it back further. the only fitment issue i had was i wasnt aware the O2 sensor's location. i should have notched out a little more. also my Z was lowered and if i were to do it again i would have replaced the flex and shortend the DP so it would give more clearance.
Yes with a l67 you will be faster then a 97+ GP as the 96 is lighter then the later years just as my MC is lighter. I too am very attached to my car. it is my first car. so i will keep it on the road as long as i can. as an aside tip. if your looking for a STB for it. look at olds cutlass's the convertables had a factory STB that will fit our cars. i had one before that i sold cause it didnt fit right with my DOHC... but i am looking to get one again.
Awesome! Thanks for the great replies! The fabrication involved is sounds better than expected. :] The trans definitely has to go. The car just hit 225k with stock eng & trans. I would like to fab a stick into it. Eventually I plan to have this thing completely unique. The L67 is going to be my temporary til I actually have the funds for what I want to do. You guys gave me a lot of information and I thank you. I'm going to get to car hunting.
