Hai i have 1997 grand prix which i recently bought last month or so and i love the car. but i feel i may have been screwed because i got it from an a hole friend.. the car just started making a horrible noise in the engine bay at idle only. under any kind of throttle it goes away.

How does it drive? It sounds to me like it's firing into the exhaust like either the cam timing is off or you got something wrong with the valvetrain.

it seems to drive fine i guess
i havnt been getting on it since the noise started
FWIW i feel the noise is from the bottom end just cause its so much louder under the car
also i can feel the the vibration in the engine bay from what appears to be the noise

does it make the noise when it is in gear? you also may want to jack the car up and grab long screw driver and find the noise.
Life goes by so fast, so why drive slow.

    O h g r e a t...

    Mitch's car.

    Sorry breh.

    Anywho...

Flex Plate will make WAY more noise at idle than under load...most of the time you only hear it at idle for that matter.

    Ummmmm...no.

    LOL

I'll drive up there and drink beer and tell you guys what to do though...either way...replacing the flex plate means the motor is coming out or the transmission/cradle is getting dropped to make it easy.

Remove plugs/wires, get big f'in screwdriver, turn flywheel tooth by tooth and check for cracks in the steel plate with a LED light would probably be your best bet.

Well if it something in the bottom end you can get to it while the motors out to do the flexplate so it's a win win

    This.

And since Mitch built it/worked on it/ghetto rigged everything in it...

It wouldn't be a bad time to go through it regardless and learn about your engine.

my vote is the flex plate as well. mine broke on mah gtp and only made noise at idle or while in gear with no throttle. sounded just like that.
