    I just usually stagger them. Not any real orientation to the engine. Just make sure the top ring is staggered from the oiler ring, is staggered from the bottom ring.

    Most go top ring then 30* then middle then 30* and bottom ring

    I go to school for aircraft maintenance engineering and when we rebuild our piston engines, we always stagger them similar to how TheOtherNick suggested.
