code p0171 p0332 wont start now

i have a 99 gtp and as of this morning she doesn't want to start. I can get the motor to fire up if i hold the gas pedal but then she dies if i take my foot off.

i changed the filter and the fuel pressure looks good at the rail so i think the pump and relay are fine.

i see spark coming from all 6 coils.

i'm changing spark plugs right now (the rears are a pain, esp. in the dark). anyway all the plugs smell like fuel and some are kinda wet-lookin...

crossing my fingers that the plugs help, but i'm kinda worried that i might have a bad fuel pressure regulator, bad injectors, or maybe a vacuum leak none of which i really know how to troubleshoot.

I'm hoping someone on this forum has been there and can guide me. Thanks!

i keep reading about vacuum leaks, but I don't see too many lines, and the ones I do see look like they are in decent shape.

what about EGR? i'm not throwing an EGR code, but would a clogged or faulty valve cause a lean condition?

i just checked the EGR and it's fine. i also cheched what I think is the BBV and it's vacuum lines seem good. there is no vacuum routing sticker on this car so i'm not sure i'm seeing all vacuum connections. here's what my neighbor's friend's scanner says:

my neighbor's friend is betting his life that it's the MAP/MAF(not sure) sensor. We removed it and he sniffed it and swears it smells burnt. lol. we'll see.

It helps a lot when you post DTC's if you post at least the description. P0171 I could fix in my sleep while having a wet dream and never disappointing the girl. P0332, gotta go look up.

P0171 Lean Bank 1 (Vacuum leak, corroded battery cables, leaking EGR tube)
P0332 Knock sensor .. some of the things required to set the code (like running for at least 10 seconds) don't work with it stalling. Is this a previous code?

IAC is on the front side facing the headlights of the TB they cost about 50 bux from Orileys. I had the P0171 and it was because i was running lean. But i later had a bad MAF sensor. Expensive but an easy fix. Check all of your Vaccum lines. I had one off on my Throttle Body last week after changing my alternator that played hell on my car until i found it. It had the same symptoms are yours.

BillBoost37, yes, P0332 was there before P0171.

Liquifire, I printed that vacuum link and put it in my car. It's a great thread too, it might help me out. I can't find the evap canister in the dark but everything else in the vacuum lines are connected.

I need to either get a vacuum pump tester and learn how to use it or get a buddy to help me start the car and keep his foot on the gas while I spray for leaks. or maybe try a new MAF and IAC. I'm not one to dump money blindly into a used car but I need to get back on the road ASAP.

I have a new Fuel Pressure Regulator here but I'm hesitant to put it on because the mechanic at work said if it was faulty then there would be fuel in the vacuum side, which there is not.

One more thing - I reset the codes and the same problem exists and no codes have come back yet after about 30 seconds of holding the engine on with my foot on the gas...not sure if that means anything.

The mechanic here at work let me borrow the shop truck for transportation and his "noids" to check for fuel injector pulse. Will do that when I get home in about an hour or two. To be continued.

the noids are like an inline spark tester, they just have prongs and a light; you unplug an injector and find the noid with the prongs that fit into your injector's harness. Then just crank the motor and check for pulse via the flashing light. so the noid showd pulse.

i then pulled the IAC. props to Liquifire for calling it. it was gummed up. i removed it from the throttle body and left it connected and turned the key on. it slowly pushed out about 1/4". I turned the key off and the pintle and spring shot out! I said fkucit and went to autozone to return the FPR and got a new IAC (and some of those darn security torx bits that you need for this car). when i got home I put on the new IAC and she fired right up and stayed running without my foot anywhere near the gas pedal. yay. thanks guys!

i'm gonna get some food and go for a test drive to check for the SES to come back.

ok the car is working, i was able to drive to and from work just fine. in fact the car runs great as far as I can tell, but the SES came back and lists P0171, not once, but twice.

it seems as though the old IAC stranded the car; a new IAC revived the car back to its running, yet problematic state. I'll hunt for vacuum leaks tomorrow when the sun comes up.

I still have not figured it out. 9 times out of 10, she fires up just fine, but there are those times where she will crank but not fire. I keep a can of starter fluid with me and that helps sometimes if I remove the intake hose, open the throttle, and spray a little in there...so maybe my fuel pump is dying. I don't know....it's really cold right now and the heater doesn't work on the driver side, so I got a 2002 F350 to commute and I just drive the GTP around town when I'm home. The town is small enough that I could walk home if I needed to....
