My '98 Grand Prix GTP sounds like I have a exhaust leak when I start the engine up from cold but the sound goes away within a minute, it lasts longer on cold mornings. The sound seems to be coming from near cylinder #5. I don't see any cracks, gaps, or soot. I'm reluctant to stick my fingers in there while the engine is running. My long term fuel trim is +16.4 at idle, I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it. What's the best way to trouble shoot this?

    +16.4 is vacuum leak.

Yes, an intake leak would make sense for the +16.4 LT fuel trim. Possibly I have two problems.

I pulled my heat shield off and I found the problem, the exhaust manifold had cracked all the way around between the #3 and #5 exhaust outlets. It took me about 2 hours to replace working in a parking lot far from my tool storage. Everything was pretty accessible except getting the torque wrench straight to torque the flange bolts.

glad to hear at least part of it is solved.

    Torquing manifold bolts though....

Honestly I've never heard of anyone doing that before.

At least it was a quick job.

i always just made em nice and tight and went on my way.

you might want to tighten them down again after a few heat cycles to make sure they didnt loosen up.
