Its gonna cost more than 20... Ill prob pay 60 for a tow to the shop and 60 more for a tow back
Sorry, meant 20 for the shop to discharge the system, that's what I paid to get mine done last year.
Not sure about unbinding the pulley either...You might be able to get a long screwdriver and try to torque it to move. If its somehow just bound....but if its been keeping the engine from cranking, then probably not.
Hopefully someone with more experience can chime in
just be an evil world hater, crack the line and let the freon out.
then go to the store and get either a delete pulley or a new compressor. switch whatever you bought onto the car, then you can drive it. refilling the system is then your only cost besides parts.
so all i have to do is break the line let it kill the planet un bolt it then bolt something else back on? is it really that simple? dont i have to flush the system or something?
Yes, just remove the old AC compressor, bolt something in its place that spins freely and go from there.
No need to flush the system, but while you're in there I would recommend installing new o-rings and a new orifice tube at the least.
ive decided to go with the replacement pulley any body have a how to on to do this... doesnt seem to complicated except that its a ***** to get to
I mean the delete pulley that gets rid of the compressor
40 bucks cant beat that with a stick ... I was actually convinced my engine was seized... oh well i learned a lot and got a cheap saab out of it ha 99 9-3 with 100k for a grand not so bad...
Pull the three nuts that hold the compressor onto the bracket off, then the one bolt in the back bracket.
Slide the compressor to the passengerside to get it off the bracket.
Push it under the motor a little on the front subframe
Put on the bypass pulley and belt.
drive to mechanic to have system discharged if it didn't "mistakenly" rupture by then and have them take it out.
quick, easy and done.
Just wanted to update everyone... I didnt have to discharge anything to get the compressor off. I dont know if this is because the freon was already out or if its just not necessary. Maybe somebody else can chime in.. but anyways bypass pulley is on and car is running great. thanks for the help
It was probably drained prior to that somehow.
Glad it's working good now..
And really glad you didnt have to get another motor....Grats on lucking out you SOB.
It felt good walking out of autozone with my $40 part.. all smiles... I even spent a couple hundred on some new tools and still thought i saved money... Now im just waiting for my tax refund and sd package then its off to paint... Ill post pics when its finished!
