called around to like 20 different places trying to see if i could rent a sc pulley puller and found a shop that had one but didn't rent it but they told me to bring in my car and they would change it for me. I made sure they knew what they were talking about with a specific sc pulley puller because some shops just told me to use a normal pulley puller.
They pulled and pulled on the pulley but it just would not budge at all and the pulley even started to bend. The mechanic told me that if he tries any harder the pulley will just break the sc shaft (from his experience) and told me to take off the sc and take it to a machine shop.

Any thoughts/ideas? My buddys friend works at a machine shop and does custom work to his own truck for the past 8 years so im pretty sure i can trust this guy with it, i just don't wanna take off the sc if there is another way around this. Thanks in advance

Rent a pulley puller from ZZP, I'm guessing the one they have is not the right one to use.

Why you want it off? You dropping sizes?

If you are I hope you got supporting mods aswell.

I nearly broke a pulley puller before, because a pulley wouldn't budge. Once in a while you get one like this. A little heat to the pulley will frequently do the trick. Make sure to change the fluid and probably end seal when you heat it.

yea im dropping to a 3.4 with the supporting mods. I wasnt aware that the sc pulley pullers were vehicle specific so I'm not sure if it was a GM puller but it was a GM dealership so i would assume so.

Dealerships do not have the proper puller to my knowledge. This is becauase supposedly they never touch a charger beyond checking the oil level.

^^If they even check the oil level you'll be lucky...99.9% of the time they will tell you its not serviceable and you have to replace the entire blower.

A local guy with his old grand prix had to use dry ice, he pulled the snout and just dropped it in dry ice, pulley popped off and he put a new one on and let it warm up and it grabbed the pulley.

i rented a puller it was a turd that kept breaking the bolt off in the sc. also its a pain in the *ss to keep the sc from turning, while trying to pull. i took it to a dealer and they just took the sc out and pressed the new one on. Thats my suggestion. unless you want to screw up and pay 2gs for a new sc. Find a pontiac dealer or go the route of taking it off and have your buddy do it.

You can use just a run of the mill pulley puller...it'll either like what you described happen...break the puller itself or the bolts...or it'll get the pulley off, RUIN the pulley...and damage the snout shaft, possibly bending it in the process. You have to have a specific puller from one of the vendors to get it off correctly.

You can have it pressed on at a machine shop with the snout off of the car...I had mine done but it was on a 50,000lb. press IIRC.

ZZP rental works out pretty good, you spend about 25-30$ in the end

I did ask them about the sc pulley puller and they have changed sc pulleys on other vehicles but I'm not sure if they ever did any GTPs. I dont know how different the sc pulley is comparred to other GM vehicles. I think I might use dry ice method and if that doesn't work ill take it to the machine shop then

You need THE specific kind of pulley puller. Most anything else will probably **** something up if you manage to get it off.

Do it right the 1st time so it doesn't screw anything up.

Keep your dry ice for raves.

I highly doubt its the pulley puller they used, why wouldn't a GM dealer not use a sc pulley puller for GMs lol but i guess im gonna be renting a pulley puller from zzp to figure out what the deal is here. if it really is stuck im gonna try putting a heat gun to the pulley and then the dry ice to the shaft and hopefully that will knock it loose of however it might be stuck. i should of done this from the beginning but I was too impatient for that extra boost xD

Coming from a guy who worked for a gm for a while gm has no tool's at all to service gen 3 and gen 5's. Nothing.. They get replaced and nothing more. Lucky for me I scored a lot of easy rebuild M90's because of this. Get your hands on a zzp puller and just go to town. You'll most likely trash what's left of the pulley but it will come off. If you dont feel like doing that. Then befor touching the blower with any other stuff, Heat, Dry Ice.. Ect.. Just removed the thing and find a big press and press it off. I've had to resort to this on about 3 different w-body's I've done MPS swaps on. It's a bit more work but it's better then giving an early death to your M90.
