After solving my oil pressure issue (bad sending unit), I've now developed another oil leak. I recently did a timing chain job, replacing all gaskets in the Fel-pro kit including new National front main seal. I ran her hard the other day looking for problems and well, I found one. The front seal was leaking pretty heavily into the balancer around the rubber part of the seal. There didn't appear to be any seepage around the metal surface to front cover. I tore her back down and the only thing I could find is a very small ring around the balancer. I see that there are sleeves for grooved balancers, but thought I'd post first before going through the trouble only to find another leak.

The front and rear seals can leak right after being replaced until they seat themselves and wear in. This is pretty common to see. The groove though isn't all that common. If you want another balancer, holler. I'll send you one for the cost of shipping.

It's like that on the parts shelf..
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

1.) How long do the seals typically take to seat properly?
2.) What is the preferred method of installing the seal - dry / lubricated with oil / lubricated with petroleum jelly / etc?

I went ahead and picked up this repair sleeve from O'Reilly Auto Parts for $5.99. Seemed like cheap insurance.
