My belt tensioner is getting squeaky on my 04 GTP and I was wondering how big a job it is to replace it. I did some resarch and from the pics it looks like there is more to it than just the pulley and tensioner, there seems to be an aluminum casting with it. Do I have to replace all that? If so is it as big a PITA as it looks? Or can just the tensioner and pulley be replaced

you just need a pulley more then likely, and there normally like $13 and just the one single bolt to replace. If you need the entire tensioner then it will be the whole cast arm, loaded with a spring and i would guess in the 50-65 range

edit- just take your belt off the pulley, grab it and try to move it up and down and side to side, if you feel any movement in that then the bearings are out and thats your issue

That's good to know I was hoping I could just do the pulley, but I was doing some searching on line like Rock Auto, etc. and I couldn't find the pulley for sale seperately. I will check auto parts stores tomorrow. Those are reverse threads right?

the main belt tensenor is reverse thread, the supercharger belt tensenor is regular thread.

my lower idler pulley for my supercharger was squeaking, pulled it off and there is a little bushing that fits inbetween the bolt and the bearing on the pulley (it takes up the slack, the bolt is not the same size as the bearing and with out the bushing the pulley can slop around) that bushing was not in right, once i put it back together it stoped squeaking.

The one that is squeaking is the one below the alternator. I think that's the main tensenor isn't it? I know that's the one becasue if you spray it with WD-40 it will stop squeaking, but then a day or so later it will be as loud as ever.

It really depends on the "type" of squeaking your getting. Diagnosing a squeaky belt system can be troublesome if you just start replacing items you "think" might be the problem. Do yourself a favor and get a nice long screwdriver, then very carefully, while the car is running, put the screwdriver on the body of the tensioner and put your ear to it. If the squeak is audible from that then you need a new tensioner.

I will try that, but I know that if I spray silicone spray right on the tensioner pulley it will stop for about a day, then start squeaking again.

It doesn't hurt to change the pulley don't get me wrong. And as long as you have a good parts shop in your area, I'm sure you can exchange it towards a tensioner replacement if you need to. I had the same problem as you and it turned out to be the tensioner making a "chirping" noise.

I ended up doing mine, it cured the problem and was fairly easy, straight forward to do.
