Hey, no one seemed to care about answering a question for me. it maybe answered somwhere else but i cant seem to get a direct answer and ive looked in alot of places. i want to make my intake today but i wont sacrafice my motor for a louder suppercharger whine(which i desire very much). all i want to know is if a "HAI" is going to hurt my car when i mat it to the floor(i know computer sensors will do what is has to during normal driving conditions). or is there enough play in the stock AFRs to allow this intake to function with out hurting my motor. keep in mind it would be my only potential performance mod...for now. i would greatly appriciate a straight forward answer cuz its the determining factor for todays plan. Just an intake... ok or harmful to a completly stock gtp?

Open cone on the TB will screw with the MAF.
A small section of pipe or a coupler is best to allow a slightly closer reading. Otherwise i'd say recalibrate the MAF.
for a CAI NO changes seem to be required.
For some sort of "Open Cone" but locating it by the headlight/fender...I have seem temps as close as 2* to ambient while offering almost all of the benefits of a cone right off the TB.

the intake im considering would be a 4"x3" rubber coupler....a 3"pvc street 45.....then a spectre 4"x9" open cone filter. i will be drilling into the pvc to insert my AIT sensor. im in the HVAC business n nice clean lookn work is what im about. and i have all day lol. i was gonna go with 4" polished allumnum 45* bend but its expensive n i dont want to wait. so im good to go with this set up?

That's basically what I have with a cheap parts store paper filter. The less bends the better...and I think you meant 4" bend...at least I hope so...

thanx guys, ill definatly post sum pics once completed. what do u mean 4" bend? it would be the same as the pvc just polished aluminum n 4x more expensive n alil more open inside than the 3" pvc 45.

Make that PVC elbow a 4" elbow. 3" presents a major restriction on these cars.
I have a 3" to 4" rubber coupler, a 4" 45* and a section of 4" pipe with a 4x8 round filter.
4" > 3"...

o i see... thanx for setting straight. ill get the 4" street 45. Is it neccesery for me to put a small lenth of pipe in between the 45 n filter? the filter is already 9" long idk if ill have much room for a peice of pipe.

They make a 3" to 4" coupler. Visit the home plumbing section. 3" over the TB and 4" over the elbow. I needed the pipe sleeve since I have a C body but you may not.

Interesting. Most of the '04+ guys have their filter strapped to the maf. Could you explain why it is bad to have the maf close to the filter?

It's attached to either the tube or the airbox. both present a known restriction and the system is calibrated to this flow and relative turbulence.
If you change this too much you will need to recalibrate the MAF somehow.
Float a msg over to Overkill and you'll hear the same thing. he recommends some tubing between the filter and MAF for this reason. Tosses off the calibration.

Well the flow through the MAF is mostly limited by its diameter.
Whats in front or behind will affect this as well.
But it shouldn't be as off as you'd think.

From a FWI to a Cone-on-TB situation it threw my trims off at least 5%. I don't doubt it flows that much better but I believe i was seeing the issues that Will was referring to as far as the turbulence and inaccurate readings.
A short section of tubing would help bridge the gap between the two conditions and restore a bit of accuracy while not sacrificing very much flow (if any).
Excessive bends are always bad however. my FWI had 2 and one was a 90*...I eliminated that and ran a 45 off the coupler to the TB and attached the filter to that basically. If it wasn't for my coolant overflow it'd be a straight shot no doubt. i may still do that later this year.

Interfooler ruins the possibility for straight pipe. :C
