Well, I'm pretty bummed about this. I just completed a swap into my Gt. During the swap, I installed, headers, magnaflow exhaust, plugs, stat, cai, 3.4 pulley etc. I had a local guy tune the car last week. I prob. drove it about 200 miles after tune, and beat on it about 1/4 of that time. After a day of running it hard, I was just cruising around enjoying the weather, when I started hearing a knocking sound. I pulled over, and checked my oil.... sure enough, looks like bass boat paint. Filled with metal shavings. Think this is from a bad tune? or could I have put too much power to a higher mileage motor (150k)? Either way, the engine is coming out in a couple weeks and replaced with an engine out of a bonneville ssei that I just bought. From there, I don't want to blow this engine with a crap tune...

Probably the guy who tuned it...did you use an L67 or an L36? A 3.4" on a L36 is pretty low with no cam/rockers/IC/meth or something to help combat the knock minus headers. I was going to say a 3.6" would be plenty for that setup then...or even just a 3.8"

I used an l67 out of a 99gtp. I swapped the complete subframe into my car. I was watching him tune, and he showed me that I had 0kr on the whole chart. What else could have gone wrong? He had tuned his own gtp a couple years ago with no problem. He still only tuned about 8-10 cars.

It was probably the tune, and just because it said 0KR doesn't mean he tuned the a/f correctly. It could have been running lean ass **** from the tune. Check the plugs
There is no replacement for displacement........unless you have a supercharger or turbo

I actually backed out of the driveway, and put it in drive. Rolled out gently, and heard a knock. I thought it was something rattling at first, then I figured I better check the oil. I'm going to be so pissed if it's the tune. So, I'm checking for bent plugs?

No offense dudes but you're all wrong, if he spun a bearing which i'm 99% sure he did it's got nothing to do with the tune. It has everything to do with the fact that you (op) were beating the **** out of it, it's a 3800, not designed in any way to take the abuse everyone gives them. What happens when you beat them too much? They spin bearings, perfectly normal, replace it and beat on it every once in a while, not over, and over, and over. A blown motor due to a tune will not put metal shavings in the oil, it'll make a brief noise, smash a plug, and start to misfire. Usually people can't even tell they chipped a piston, they just assume it's a misfire. Some peeps have even driven for 6+months on a chipped piston before they realize something went wrong. The 3800 is strong but really weak at the same time, make sense?

Yup who's to say the pistons weren't chipped before the motor swap?

Yeah, I'm just guessing at the problem as of now till I get to pulling the engine out and tearing it down. The engine going in is going to remain stock. Might rebuild this one, might sell it, not sure. I'll keep you posted on what I find. *I hope it was my fault and not the tune. It was just weird how it happened. I was just cruising it around all day, enjoying the weather. Now, the night before, thats a different story. Oh well, I should have gone over engine better before I put it in. Live and learn.
