I am new to modding and was wondering if making a custom FWI is a good alternative to buying a $200+ intake. I am on an extreme budget and was wondering if anyone has experience with this or should I just save up for a couple months and buy a FWi. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

...also, is a FWI the way to go for most horsepower gain and decreased CR, or should I go with CAI?

GREAT idea. you can have the best FWI you can get for way less than buying one. if you put the cone close to the fenderwell at least then its better then the factory box by a mile.

you can probably put together an awesome intake for ~$80. 4" PVC, 22.5* bend, and a 4" cone.

Ive run an open cone, and Ive run the SLP intake. I had a Thrasher intake that never made it to the car and they are all getting dumped in favor of a FWI if that tells you anything.

$80 is a decent number. The highest price part will be the filter. I used a K&N 9" filter with a 4" opening. Mine is in the fenderwell. I take my tire off (optional maybe) and undo the lining to get to it for cleaning. It's a pain but oh well.

Save some money by buying a smaller cone filter. You don't need a filter that supports 600hp.

I've had good luck with the MSP CAI. When at the track, I just pop out the headlight and its just like ram air. You could probably fabricate something similar because the filter just attaches to the stock bellows with a short piece of PVC. The challenge would be to build a box around the filter.
