Thread: Very bad night, broke motor mount

Well I bought my polished dog bones from 3800, and some red poly ounts from Intense. The new bushings are a bit wider then the stock and when I forced them into my right(drivers) side mount bracket.... SNAP. The bracket broke.
The real crappy part is I just picked up the bracket from the chromer today. I am sooo POed right now I am seeing red. Anyone have any advice? Any experience with these poly bushings?

Both dogbones loom the same. When I press the bushings in by themselves they are more snug. As soon as I press in the metal inner sleeve they want to push back out. BUT even when they are snug they are a bit wider than the stock ones. I know I have to replace the bracket but I dont need a repeat.

No the sleeve wont go through the bracket hole. The hole in the bracket is only big enough for the bolt. I am confused why the bushings are so much wider. I know they are meant to fit snug, but geeze, these are about 1/4 inch or more wider.

Well I'm off to bed. I'll check back tomorrow. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Some Gorilla Glue will fix that right up good as new.

mine are the same, and have had no problems. hmm. the only other thing I would think of would be an imperfection in the metal.

all the chemical treating just made it come out of hiding.

when I installed mine....

I had the metal sleeve already inside one of the sides...and put that side in first. then I took the other side....and with all my might...puched it over the sleeve and into place.

if you rn the top as well as the lowers...you are in for one BIG vibration. and I MEAN BIG!!!

Thanks, I wondered if the chroming process weakened the metal also. Now I am in search of a bracket.
BIG vibration? hmmmm maybe I should get stockers for the lowers then? I dont need vibration. I run a lot of highway miles, that would be annoying.
I'll pick up some stock replacements today and hopefully someone has a bracket. I assume junkyards are my only hope?

in all honesty. I would just use the lower mounts by the radiator for poly. that way the engine does not rock back and forth. the uppers....I would leave rubber as it eliminates the vibrations.

I had used botht he uppers and lowers in my GTP. riding around town is fine..but once the car comes to a complete stop....I got a VERY NICE back massage. and it rattled my dash like a jackhammer.

I would stick to the lower ones for a daily driver..and use the poly uppers for the track for that little extra....

Sorry about the bad luck. I have those same bushings installed in stock dogbones w/o issue. The poly is slighly wider but is soft enough to have plenty of give. I can't imagine the problem having anything to do with the poly bushings.

Thanks, Maybe the issue was with the bracket and the chroming process brought it out as it was suggested.
So since the polys are wider its ok they mushroom out a bit when pressed into place?

I can say that it is true that plating does weaken parts to a certain amount.

I know many run these dog bones, but I have never seen anyone break the mount like this, because of this.

Personally, I run the stock dog bones, with stock rubber bushings in them. That way there is "some" give to absorb the engine vibration. For the motor mounts that the dog bones connect to, those have POLY bushings in them for sure, that helps with the front to back engine movement from the torque. My lowers are stock rubber, and thats more than enough for me.

ED should be able to get you that replacement part easy and cheap.

Dave, those aluminum mounts are weak in the first place. I snapped mine a long time ago and it got worse as time went on. I contacted Ed and had asked him about it. The polished dogbones from 3800 are a little different from the stock dogbones. Most people tend to over tighten them and the aluminum mount bends in as it gets tighter. with the vibrations in the engine, it can cause them to snap.

The best advice I can give you is what Ed told me, make sure you tighten them, but not overly tight. Also, if you can get a washer to act as a spacer for those to go between the bushing and the mount, it'll help a little also.

Hopefully you can get a replacement in somewhat quick and get it all put together. Hope this helps.
