Okay, So I let my xhubby borrow the prix.....I get home and he tells me my car is making a funny sound almost like KR and REALLY loud...So of course I know it could be false knock since I have never heard it before and have no clue why it would just start for no reason. I go out side and start the car..... well all I hear is a clinking sound like if you was to put beans in a pill bottle and shake it around!!!! NOT GOOD!!!! Well it was dark and the only light I had was the porch light. So this morning I got up went out side started the car and could hear it not as loud but it seems the sound is coming from my heads. I have NO clue where to start! I tried to get my sc drain plug off and couldnt!! I even let my xhubby try and he started to strip it! I was going to check my coupler and see but since I can't get the oil out I don't know what to do!!! I did notice that the sound is not THAT loud like it was last night but last night the car was good and warm and this morning it wasent. Do any of you guys have any clue on how to get my drain plug out and on some ideas to see if it is my heads. I have a sound clip but im getting a error when I try to put it on my pc. If you guys need to hear it pm your cell number and I will send it. Thanks so much guys!

rocks in a tumbler noise is a supercharger coupler.

lifters tick and would change with the speed of the motor.

a lower end knock would sound deep and knock like.

just for your knowledge, detonation/knock/"KR" sounds like popcorn popping.

You could always pull the charger completely off and remove the snout bolts that way and just let the oil spill out and worry about getting the fill plug later. Otherwise use penetration oil and hope it dosen't strip anymore. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL removing the snout bolts they are torx heads with lots of white thread locker on them and WILL strip out when trying to remove them, this happened to me and it was a total nightmare...do yourself a favor and get new allen head socket style bolts to replace them. You will also need anerobic gasket maker for the mating surfaces.

you could pull the super charger belt so the charger doesn't spin when you start it. That would tell you weather its the charger or the heads.

Well I was to worried to remove the snout so I just took the belt off and im still getting a sound back towards the head area...its a sound I have never really heard so thats why im kinda thrown off on what it could be! When the engine was good and warm it sounded almost like a lifter but when the car was cold it was VERY hard to hear it. The oil was changed rmmm like 2 weeks ago...and I checked it and its still good!

    man's got it.

If any of the tips of the plugs are smashed down then you have more issues than blower/lifter noises

Well okay this is what I got so far! Last night the car was ran...and ran good so it was good and warm and was making that horrible sound! This morning started the car couldn't really hear anything but did seem to hear a slight sound from the head area. I reved some and let the engine warm up some and started to hear it more. I was searching around on Youtube and found some videos of couplers going bad in the m90s and it sounded JUST like that! BUTTTTTTT I was told that if my coupler is going bad it would ALWAYS make that sound! And I can't post a sound clip up here I can only send it threw sms txt on a cell phone! I thought it wouldnt hurt to just take off the snout and look at the coupler to see if it looks like its worn down or out however you wanna say it lol. But my SC drain plug is not stripped thanks to my xhubby!!! So im going to have to get something to remove it then get a replacement one before I do anything!! Its 1:00am right now but tomorrow I will check the spark plugs to be sure. Thanks so much guys!

lol ya, Im sorry I just hear a sound and freak out and of course think it could be the worse thing ever!!! And to top everything off I have never actually got my hands dirty on a Grand Prix besides the basic spark plugs and oil stuff! So im excited to get in there and do it but worried imma brake something! LOL. But I know I got you guys to help me out! Tomorrow im going to drain the oil and go ahead and look at the coupler to make sure. If its not that then I might just remove the whole SC to get closer to the head and see what I can find.

Well if you said you took your belt off and it still made the noise then it is def. not the coupler in the S/C.

That is what I was thinking...sounds valvetrain related to me. Go buy some Lucas Oil Stabilizer and if you put it in the oil and it quiets the sound then it is a lifter/valvespring issue...

Yeah, That's a good alternative to tearing everything down. But it did not seem to work on mine. Maybe it was to far gone at that point.

Okay....So...I was listing to sound clips on the net of couplers that are bad the sound I heard sounds JUST like that! BUT! I only got that sound when the engine was good and warm and had been driven hard. I was talking to Bio last night and he somewhat agrees that if it is the coupler it should make the sound at ALL times. Im going to go ahead and remove the snout to look at the coupler to be sure. BUT I have to wait until I can get a replacement SC drain plug. It will be in tomorrow because no GM dealership has one in the state of Arkansas! Or does anyone know what size it is? Maybe a bolt would work.

You will more than likley not be able to tell if it is the coupler by looking at it. There is a lot of force being exerted on the couplers and rotor pack. Most of the time it is not even something you can replicate the noise with making everything spin by hand.

The first thing you need to do is take the belt off with a 15mm wrench at what ever time you can hear the noise the best. If it stops then it is the supercharger coupler. Or at least something in the S/C.

I myself will never in my life make that much of a mess on my car just to look at the coupler or anything in the supercharger. IF i'm taking things apart to fix something then that's different. But more than likely i'm going to take the supercharger off. To me it's easier and definetly cleaner.

Do your self a favor and just do what everyone is suggesting. Take the belt off. You can still drive the car. If the noise goes away. You have found your issue.
