the way octane is figured it would technically be a percentage wouldn't it? ((R+M)/2.)
    also found
Octane number is the number which gives the percentage, by volume, of iso-octane in a mixture of iso-octane and normal heptane, that would have the same anti-knocking capacity as the fuel which is under consideration. For example, gasoline with the same knocking characteristics as a mixture of 90% iso-octane and 10% heptane would have an octane rating of 90. [1]

From a short read, it pretty much depends on the blends of fuel you have. If you start with 100 octane race gasoline, then that is your starting point. Blending in different additives with a higher octane rating will result in a higher total octane rating in the final product.

I updated the first post with a little more information.

    i have a question:
i have a 97 GTP, bought it 14 months ago, always ran it on 86 octane (in NM regular is 86, not 87), never encountered problems, such as knocking. i recently filled up on premium 91 octane (ive used 4 gallons so far, i burn a gallon a day) i see no difference. so is it really important?

In the long run , running higher octane gas with other preventative maintenance will extend the life of your engine.I allways use sunoco 93 octance...my car seems to like it.

wouldnt u here it or feel it? ive never noticed any problems.

and if i should continue using premium gas, does it matter what station i get it from? i usually go to the cheapest station, ive tried others and noticed no difference

You won't hear or feel knock unless it's extremely severe. The only way most of us know our car knocks is a scanner of some sort. Otherwise there is no easily identifiable sign.

So, you could be knocking and not even know it.

well, do u think 91 octane is enough? thats the highest most stations carry, and i dont feel like going out of my way to buy special gas. so 91 is enough right?

What does your manual say? I know the Impala SS (L67) manual says something like "Premium fuel required (91/93 octane)".

it says premium fuel required. so i assume 91 is good enough. what about after a few basic cheaper mods? i hope 91 is good enough for most things, because i dont know of too many places that sell higher than 91 (and gas is expensive, paying for 93+ would be a pain) but 91 should be enough...

If you aren't willing to put premium gas in your car, please sell it to someone that is...
It costs $3.20/tank to go from Crap Gas to Premium and only $1.60/tank to go from Mid-grade to Premium!
You'll get better mileage as an added bonus to not Cracking A Piston...

i AM willing to buy premium gas, however, i am just cringing at the thought of needing MORE than 91 octane (i have no problem buying 91), because of every gas station where i live 91 is the highest they sell, i see people with 93 octane on these forums and that is not an option for me where i live. 91 is premium gas, btw.

You'll be fine. People on here have run on less then 91 and have had no problems. Some even run 85 or 86 [i forget] with a tune. I have never heard of a problem that was directly related to running 2 octane less, our engines are quite durable.
