Re: Planning my mods, need advice
Hi Folks its been a while, ive been consumed with other projects. Ive taken the regal to a few car shows and she is an absolute hit. Most people my age have no idea what it is other than an old guys car. (im 25) I pop the hood and with the IC belt wrap and SC people flock to it and gawk.
WIth the zzp BF sale coming up i want to get some more stuff for the car. I know i need one of their modified fuel rails. the one i made has a vacuum leak and i cant tune it because the fuel trims are all over the place. I have a few other items im thinking about picking up if there is a good deal.
1. N* TB and adapter (with the mods i have will this help? I never ported the SC inlet and dont plan to any time soon)
2. More pulleys. (i think with the stuff i have on hand i can run smaller than a 2.9 once its tuned)
3. F body brakes.
I have a powerlog for the front bank i just need to install. Is there anything else you guys think i should watch for? I want to do meth, but thats probably out of budget.
RIght now i have:
2.9 pulley
ported SC outlet
Ported LIM
ZZP FSIC
e85
80#
1.9 rockers
DP
Powerlog

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
The n* will help, but you are leaving most of the power on the table without porting the inlet to match.

Just how much of a difference does porting the inlet make? Are we talking measurable difference on the dyno?
I have a dyno pull scheduled for the 13th. I hoping to put down at least 280. My goal with the build has been to put down more power on the dyno than my Volvo made at 280 AWHP and 360 tq. Dont know if im there yet. By the time i dyno, ill have the power log and a 2.8 on it.

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
this is why people do a gen 5 swap. because the inlet is already 75mm, which is also the diameter of the northstar. a bigger inlet makes maybe 10 more horsepower, I don't really know for sure, but the butt dyno really likes it.
-
Re: Planning my mods, need advice
Yeah that's a huge advantage to the Gen 5.
I would estimate 10-20 up by opening it up.

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
Hp not "up". Can't edit the post for some reason.

When i ordered my IC i ordered it for a gen 3, will a Gen 5 work with the Gen 3 IC core? If so i may begin looking for one. If not, My next big step will be a proper cam or a turbo.

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
Yes, the outlet is a bit different, but it works.
-
Re: Planning my mods, need advice
i got a gen 5 on a gen 3 fsic. it works just fine.
-
Re: Planning my mods, need advice
Would i have to port the gen5 outlet like i did with the Gen 3? I can use the same lower intake since the FSIC is in between right?
If zzp drops their price on their used gen5 I might just pick it up. I really want to put down some impressive power numbers on the dyno.

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
There's no reason to touch the outlet on a gen 5. It doesn't have those bolt bosses like the 3 does. It's already about as good as it's going to get.

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
Hey folks,
Back again on another modding Binge.
I have:
Meth
wideband o2
North star adapter kit
All coming in the mail.
I have a few quesitons.
1. Will any of the North star kits work or is there anything specific i need to buy
2. Is my stock trans going to detonate the first time i hit power? (I never launch it, i roll into power)
3. will porting the inlet on the SC give me more SC whine?
4. Should i start working on a 3" cat back? I have the power log and the DP, but the rest is the nasty 2.5" factory single exhaust. Ive watched a few episodes of engine masters where they showed that 2.5 can definitely kill power on a higher output engine.

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
Just get the adapter you need, either gen 3 or 5. Your trans will probably be fine if you don't beat on it. But it also could break. Mine has been good for 5 years with a fair amount of thrashing. But I anticipate issues eventually. No, porting will not make it whine. And if you like the whine, meth will make it even quieter. Exhaust I'm not positive, but I think you need to be making some decent power before it's an issue. Maybe 350-400 wheel? Not sure but I wouldn't worry with what mods u have.

I have the Gen 3 SC, just want to make sure that any N* will work.
I guess that means i will need to go to a 2.6 inch pulley or something at some point.
Mods as a refresher:
e85
80# injectors
AEM 340lph e85 pump
1.9 rockers
ZZP FS IC
Power log
ZZP DP
zzp Fuel rails
zzp Belt Wrap
2.9 (for now) pulley .

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
I didn't notice any gains when I went from a 2.8 to a 2.6 with the gen 3. with your mods, you should really consider upgrading to a gen 5. one benefit from upgrading to the gen 5 is that the inlet is already at 75mm's so you don't need to port it, unless you really want some blower noises, in which case, i've heard of people porting the inlet to 90mm's and installing an LS1 throttle body with the corresponding diameter. they really sound wicked. there is one guy I would trust to do the port work, and it's not cheap. look up Steigemeier on the web. he's ported gen 5's before, and it helps, I don't know how much because it hasn't been done very often. when I was building my 2001 GTP, I went with ebay headers with an ebay downpipe that was catless. if I was going to do it again, I would have gotten a custom 3" downpipe made from a local exhaust shop or something like that. I never bothered to change the stock catback, i'm not aware of any gains to going with a 3" exhaust setup.
on a different topic, I'm glad to see you are back, i've been curious about your builds for a while.

on the grand prix i would totally agree about the catback, but the regal has a single exhaust.
As for the Gen 5, what all is involved in slapping it on my gen 3 FSIC?
If i have to spend the money to get a new IC core, i might as well s tart buying turbo/cam parts.
For the moment the plan is to let my dad attack the inlet on my stage 3 with a die grinder. until it matches the adapter plate . Is there any reason i should do this? Its basically free except for labor and an SC gasket.

As for being back, my interests tend to roam, i have 4 cars and each one of them is a project.
99 tahoe (1200 bucks)
2019 Mustang GT (Steeda coilovers, subframe brace, camber kit, bushing inserts, front/rear sways, lund e85, 472 rwhp)
2017 GTI (golf R turbo, Coilovers, rear sway , upgraded intercooler 350ish whp and 420_tq)

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
I was considering doing a 2.6 on my Gen 3 but said heck with it and got a Gen 5. Gives me a little more room to mod. Like Marshal said, going lower than a 2.8 is really only making more hot air. But maybe in your case there is a gain to be had since you are cooling that hot air. I didn't know that porting it would make more noise. But when u spray it with water, it does quiet it a good bit. I turned the meth off to get a good non meth tune and realized this. It's noticably louder.

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
Alright fellas ,
What is involved in swapping to a gen 5 on a gen 3 FSIC?
Also i just ordered the Gen 3 north star adapter plate, can i make that work or does it have to go back?

Re: Planning my mods, need advice
Gen III Gen V Intercooler differences
I think you can do it. I'm still researching intercoolers myself. Almost pulled the trigger on the new zzp intercooler, then talked myself out of it. Now I'm talking myself back into it.
Pretty sure the TB adapter won't work. Gen V is 4 bolt, 3 is 3 bolt. Besides, gen V is 75mm. 3 is 70?
