My 2002 GTP Coupe has been having some issues recently in terms of gas mileage and such. The gas gauge tends to float and never be accurate at all any longer, it'll be on 3/4 tank sometimes when it's dead empty. On that same note the Fuel Used on the DIC, once it says about 16 gallons (reset every time at fill up) the car is empty and has run out a few times on me despite always filling up a full 18 gallons. Lastly, once I hit that 16 gallon mark, my Trip ODO (which I also reset at every fill up) is sitting right about 300 miles or less, which up until recently I was getting 25-27mpg most of the time. Thoughts? Ideas?

Sounds like the fuel sending unit is junk. Mine on my 00GT does the same thing. I go by my trip odo. I know once I hit 400mi. it's time to fill up. Pretty sure these cars only have a ~17gal. tank. I've never filled mine from totally empty before though.

What type of driving do you do? Mostly city? Combo of hwy and city, or mostly highway? That and your driving style will impact fuel mileage, among other things.

Tires properly inflated? How many miles on the plugs/wires? Clean the MAF and replace the air filter lately?

Fuel Pump Floater? Drop the tank and replace the whole assembly. That's probably what's throwing off the DIC

FordMan, It's a combo of city/hwy driving, my driving style is that of an elderly woman since the DMV and I have an understanding whereby I don't get pulled over anymore and they'll let me retain my license

Tires are brand new Continental True Contacts with less than 1k on them, plugs and wires were just replaced 2-3k ago hoping that would help. I haven't cleaned the MAF, but it's a hot air assembly, the cone has been cleaned and oiled recently though.

Slow6, can the Fuel Pump Floater not be accessed from the hatch under the rear seat at all?

Yes, it can. Very easily. No need to drop the tank.

Figure your MPGs by hand to compare. They is the only surefire way to know.
