I wish I had a picture of the ones I've had in my posession, but I know for a fact the L36 one was black and the L26 one was red. Whether that's intentional to differentiate or just the colors they happened to use is still anyone's guess without more input. I trimmed the L36 one to fit an L26 but I personally thought the fitment was wonky. In spite of trimming very little at a time, there were always some gaps on a few cylinders, but maybe I'm just bad at trimming them :P

And damnit Bill, I wish we could do a dyno comparison of your DIY HV3 versus the real thing to actually convince people to stay away from them. It's quite a lot of money for a hunk of plastic, I'd have never gotten mine if I didn't get it used for super cheap. As far as NA 3800's go, I think even basic mods should only be bought at a fraction of their price. Topswap or go for mpg.

stock is certainly a stronger type of plastic than the ****box dorman one and the revised GM is way better. If you ever have the chance, take a Phillips screwdriver and just start stabbing the OE one and then a dorman one and see what happens. I did this in a junkyard to see if a GM tech was bull****ting and he wasn't.

all you do is bellmouth the lim port openings with a rotary grinder or a hand file and throw out the port inserts

the extra 3/4" of port length the hv inserts adds doesn't do much for tq, and many that run em are turbo so port length is practically a non-issue in terms of the power band.

Well I haven't tested dorman's, but I did try smashing the old stock one and couldn't. I threw it on the ground, and hit it with a sledge and it didn't break lol. BUT the egr and coolant port area was my main concern.

Alright. Did some research and found some interesting stuff. The photo I was talking about isn't on ZZP's website anymore but found it on google images.

If you look to the the right of each HV3 in the photo, you'll see a transparent text saying Series 3 on the red one and Series 2 on the black one.

here's some extras just to get a different angle

There is 2 good pics of it assembled here in post #14

I stole this one here from http://www.impalaforums.com/diy-do-i...36-engine.html

During my research I happened to find this post by Bill and had to take a screenshot of it. I wonder why Bill said this because it seems he knows that there actually is a difference....

lol the revised GM one has a metal spacer built in so the EGR pipe doesn't burn a hole or 2 in the plenum

You can easily see the red one is skinnier to fit in easier with no modification for the aluminum UIM

I'm done with the research for now but I'll get the right GM part # for the revised one and a pic to show you that the spacer is built in to the plenum which eliminates the need for the one in the LIM

So would someone actually be able to make a DIY HV3 thread? Something I'd be interested in if it meant spending a day in the garage.

For an n/a car: ghetto removal of the stock runners<DIY bell mouthing<HVII<HV3

There was a dyno comparison between the HVII (High Velocity Intake Insert) and the HV3 back in the day. It shifted the peak RPM to the left a couple hundred rpm and had some midrange gains. Not really a big surprise. A pushrod v6 doesn't need a huge plenum and super short runner length.

    95 Bonneville SLE: L36/F40/E39. 98 Infiniti i30: VQ35HR/5MTVLSD. 07 Ducati Monster S2R 800: DS1000 swap. 74 Yamaha DT175: Brap.

    Thanks Mike..

Kyle, Mike's the kind of guy to have tried each and every combo. Hell.. at one point he even did a vacuum pump. Reason why I asked at one point was probably someone that I knew was looking for one. Hell...I've even bought a couple when I thought about doing various setups in the past. This isn't the only 3800 I've owned, it's the 7th Regal. Yes, I've had 7 Regals.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
