Will the electronics work with this motor? I would find a series 2 but the series 3 has 100k miles and is a bit less money.

you'll need to swap the injectors, the upper intake, tb. lim and the alt and its bracket. and any other sensors that dont plug in like they should you can take from the old engine

the trans would be more work to make work. search for a pnp swap. thats what you'll need to do.

You do not need to swap out the upper intake and lim there is a thread here that tells you how to do the swap. But you would need your tb and a tb adapter to make them work and running and taping a line so the pcv works. Oh and if the engine that you get has an aluminum oil pan you will either need to swap oil pans, grind down your engine mount bracket or swap in an aluminum sub frame. This
The alt bracket is the same 99-08. At least last time I looked it was. And I am pretty sure the alternator will work.
Trans will work but it is a lot of working and custom tuning to get it to work.

No idea what you are driving..

A trans from 04+ does not go well in a 97-03

Long story short, my car never made it in for the recall on the plenum because it wasn't owned by me at the time. It basically is on its last legs and has severe rod knock. I really want to replace the motor for under $500 and am going to do the tranny too just to save time.

Could one of you maybe add a more detailed list of what honestly would need to happen to shove a series 3 under the hood of my 99? or maybe just link me to a page that has it done already. I would also like to see what it would take to maybe put a s/c motor in too. I'm just trying to find a motor that I can put in that'll be cost effective and not have more than like 120k miles on it.

seriously thanks for any help you guys have given me. I am a poor college student who will really need a car this summer. I prefer to fix this one as the rest of the car is mechanically up to par, and is decently maintained. This was sort of out of the blue.

    Sure thing

Decide which way you are going.

    S3 NA or S3SC :
Use the aluminum oil pan and it's engine mount that comes on it. Looks like this:

You will need to look at your subframe and where the engine mount goes, there's a little flap of metal that would be on the oil pan side. This picture shows it removed. It's maybe 1/4" or so of metal. Easy to cut/grind.

That takes care of using the oil pan that is easy to redo the gasket and it's mount.

Only other thing you'll need to do is PCV. Use this first post to keep pcv function.

    Now.. if you go NA:
Get a S3 to L36 throttle body adapter from Sseilmnop, pm him... he has or can make it.

Here's what one looks like between the TB and SC

Depending on how complete the engine is.. hook up your evap line from the fuel tank right to the evap on the UIM, open up the wire loom to cut the black tape and get the red connector for the evap from where it originally is located to the new location.

You can almost make both out in this pic of the S3 NA that lives in my car.

If the flex plate is on there.. it should have two sets of holes for the torque converter. As long as it does, it'll bolt right up to anything.

Look over the two motors side by side and ask anything you see that's different. I would expect the outlet of the rear exhaust manifold should be different, if it's in a slightly different location, swap only the rear manifold.

    Boss...gotta run
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
