car door lock doesn't work without keyless entry HELP! 2006 GRAND PRIX

Hi i have a 2006 Grand prix base model and I was wondering if it has a transponder key or not and whether or not it effects door locks or just ignition. The reason I ask is because ever since I got my car 3 years ago the only way I've been able to open the car is to use the remote for keyless entry. The only keyhole the car has is on the drivers side door and when i put the key in it wont turn. But today i went in to canadian tire and the guy at the counter said it could have to do with the chip, but I"ve been reading all over the internet and it seems that for all the cars mentioned the chip in the key only effects the ignition. So any way, I'm worried that the keyless remote may be on its way out sooner or later and was hoping to fix this problem soon but know what much about the locking system and was planning to do this job myself, that is if thats possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

id open the door up, and check out the door linkage, as well as the lock buttons.

will the lock button work on the pass side door?

also possible your key is not for the lock in the door. door locks are changed with a C clip removed not much holds it in there you'll see. or the lock is frozen from not being used. try some graphite lock spray in there.

The passenger side lock switch does work yes. What do you mean the key is not for the lock? Are you saying the dealer switched the lock where i bought it and didn't bother to do it right? also if i decide to change the lock will it be a major job dealing with the keyless entry system or still pretty basic.

ok, if the pass side lock switch works that means the driver side switch is more than likely bad.

the lock could have been swapped out at any time of the cars life, unless you bought it new, then id say for sure its dry inside and frozen up, graphite spray should fix it up, spray, then put the key in jiggle it back and Fourth till it breaks free.

the chip in the key has nothing to do with the door locks, only the security in the cars ignition.

Yea I agree with scotty. The lock cylinder maybe seized or someone may have changed the lock cylinder but I doubt it. Definitely put some graphite in there and go from there

oh, if it comes to it, you can buy a new pair of locks, with keys at the parts store for under 20 bucks. theres a C clip that hold the lock to the door, you pull the clip then un do the linkage from the lock, then install the new one. real easy to change.

Ok thanks a lot guys. I'll try the graphite spray tomorrow. By the way the drivers side switch works as well and you said pair of locks. I only have one lock for a key on the drivers side door. not even a trunk key hole. if that helps

door locks are sold in pairs. just the way it is.

ok I tried the graphite spray today and no luck. I also went to three different part stores and every one of them said they couldn't get a replacement lock for the door. Why would that be? Is it because of car theft that they said they couldn't get me one, or what? one guy said I should take it to GM but I know that is gonna be a rip off. Another guy said he has a mechanic friend who could re code the lock for me which is seeming like the best option. However, that's providing that the lock simply doesn't fit the key and isn't damaged . any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

could remove it, then soak it in wd-40 or other penetrating oil, if it dont break free after that id think its not the right lock or some crap like that. hard to say tho. never seen one that was the right key not at least move some.

i do mean soak for 24 hours. not 10 minutes.

I had the same problem with mine as well...I couldn't even get the key all the way in the lock. I had to take the lock out and soak in a lubricant ...(even vinegar if its seized bad ) as the tumblers were all seized took a few days of soaking and working the key in and out and of the lock to finally get it freed up.

Mine was ....couldn't even get the key all the way in. When i did finally get it in it took another day or so to get it to turn .

you guys got some dry locks out there.

i haven't used the key in the door lock in years, i should try them. i know the trunk key works. i used it not to long ago when the battery was out of the car.

Ok so i had the door panel off today but couldn't figure out how to get the lock out. Do i need to take the outside door handle off in order to do it?

Nope shouldn't have to take the handle off....there is a clip that holds the lock in place similar to flex line clip if memory serves me...just pull the clip off and disconnect it from the linkage at the end of the lock by moving the lock. you may be able to get at it a little easier if you unbolt the handle but I don't believe you have to.

this is what they look like, it my not be a c clip but a circle with a smaller side. pliers and a something to hit the plies with will pull it out, you grab the tab thats sticking up at the bottom of it, or the side, depends on how its been installed.

the down side of the part has a tab to grab onto.

Well i managed to get the lock out today and it would've been nearly impossible without taking the handle out, but no big deal. Then I couldn't find even one store that sold a replacement lock (even online) i dont know why. So after a while of soaking it in wd40 i decided I'd just take it apart and see what i could do. Turns out once you've got the lock apart its actually a pretty simple little thing. It took a few hours of messing around with it but i fixed it. It was something that looked like a tumbler but couldn't be taken out. I just had to press it in a bit move the tumblers around and give them some smooth motion and then reassemble it. Works fine now. Any way thanks for all your help guys. I appreciate it.
