Hi guys, it's been awhile since my last post. I recently noticed a knocking sound from my engine although it needs to be warmed up before u can hear it(as when it's first started up its fine...usually takes about 3-5 mins before knocking sound starts)

    Some notes to consider ...maybe?
I changed oil to synthectic about 3000-4000 kms ago.
The "knocking" sound is only at idle (the sound goes away as soon as I press the gas pedal)

Any ideas?.......At first i thought it may have a stuck valve, but I wouldn't think it would take the 3-5 mins to start hearing that as You can usually hear them right off on a cold startup.

    Thx for any ideas.

No the oil light isn't on...and sorry no video.

Also changed the oil back to normal 5w30...not synthetic just today...funny thing I had the front of the car jacked up until the tires were 5 inches or so off the ground and let the car run for 5 mins and no knocking sound. However after changing the oil and driving the 15 mins back to my house the knocking is there again..... only @ idle thou( like always).

I would assume if it was a internal engine problem it wouldn't take time to start knocking as it always does.
Also it is not burning any oil ..It's got me stumped!

not sure what kind of mileage the car has, but you should never switch to synthetic on hi mileage cars.

You can upload it to youtube and post the link here. I think photobucket lets you upload videos also.

Take the plastic guard off the flex plate cover and see if you can find a crack in the flex plate itself. You will have to bump the starter or turn the motor over by hand to see the whole thing.

If it were the flexplate would I not have a problem when engaging the starter to start the car...or is this not often the case?

starter works fine, it cracks then clunks. stops with some gas. engine needs to come out, or the tranny, pick one. if its the flex plate.

Not always the case if you had teeth missing then yea it'll prevent the start from engaging but a flexplate crack will still allow the car to run it'll just make noise

You can switch to synthetic whenever you want, please don't believe those old myths. The only thing synthetic may do is leak more.

Another thing to check would be sludge build up in the bottom of the oil pan. Sludge can block the oil from being sucked up the the oil pump when the engine is running. I worked on a dodge that the problem was low oil pressure after 5 min. of running time, turned out the be sludge in the oil pan, 1 inch thick.

if your lucky its the flex plate.

make another vid, but hold it at say 2,000 rpm's for a few seconds, then let the throttle snap back to idle.

also move the camera around the engine so we can hear it from all sides. and under the car.
