I've replaced my water pump now twice and I've never applied silicone to those bolts. I have 206k and would certainly want to avoid replacing the timing gasket. Should I pull those long bolts and seal them with silicone?
Do I need to drain any coolant at all or just pull the long bolts and apply silicone. What type of silicone should I use I want to make sure I get the right one.
My son 2008 had the same problem. Was overheating which in Arizona summertime not hard to do. Found the timing chain cover gasket was bad towards the top where it meets the block Coolant was seeping from there. Went ahead since I was doing all this work and replaced the elbows for$3.99 at autozone and put a new water pump in since you have to pull it anyways to get the timing cover off. As to the oil pan gasket, I just used RTV on that small section that the timing cover goes over. Yes, be sure to put thread sealer on your water pump bolts. Repair took me about 10 hours and many scratches on my arm. Was a good training lesson for my 18 year old son. We just drove the car to Oklahoma and back to Arizona with no issues.
