Replaced engine. Now cricket appears. gotta kill it

My first post everyone, please bare with me. I have a 97 GP SE that just had the motor replaced. I believe that the motor came from a 98 Buick Le Sabre so the mechanic tells me. Any way, all nessary part exchanges were made ie throttle body, mount, fly wheel, etc. We Crank her up she is purring like a kitten.....until 5 minutes later. There appears to be a cricket-like sound or rather a chirp-like sound comming from the altinator area that I cannot make go away.

We only hear this sound when the motor is revved or when motor is under load/in drive.

I haven't ruled-out the altenator because I have to take it to the alt. shop and have them look at it. Could be the altenator pulley. I've replaced the tensioner pulley, and the serp. belt so far. Initially the sound went away when I put on the new serp. belt, but it came back after about 40miles. Yesterday the altenator shop replaced the alt. pulley. I will mount the alt. tomorrow and see what I get. I was just wondering if anyone out there has had this problem before. Thanks in advance. Holla!!

alt. bearings going bad is not uncommon , especially if that motor sat in a car for awhile befor being pulled to install in yours. once the alt is out you should be able to spin it and get an idea of what shape the bearings are in. could also possibly be the water pump.

Hey 59chevy. Thanks for the fast response. The alt. was from the original motor and it was recently rebuilt at the alt. shop. the guy there did replace the pulley yesterday 11/13. Other than that, the alt. was charging like a champ. i was thinking about that water pump. Trying to do a process of elimination on replacing these parts.

Dont rule out the alternator just yet, it could be charging fine but the bearings in it still could be borderline. Though, given that it has been rebuilt, I would put it further down on the list for now and go for things like the water pump as 59chevy suggested.

It could also be one of the pullies as well. The only thing I could suggest would be to get an automotive stethoscope and see if you can determine exactly where the sound is coming from.

I had that happen right before one of my idler pulleies seized up. If you can't get your hands on a automotive stethoscope , a long screw driver will work also.

I guess it's never to late to reply. Tha ks to all that offered advice. Well, I killed that cricket. Turned out to be the idler/tensioner pulley. Replaced all necessary components, cranked her up and no cricket. Thanks again
