My 04 Grand Prix has started to run hotter than it should, up to 240...would probably go higher if I let it. Have replaced coolant elbows, t stat and bled the system and replaced radiator cap. Did a pressure check on the radiator and it lost one pound in 20 minutes. It will cool down immensely if I run the ac on hot. Any ideas?

Is the radiator just all gunked up?
Does removing the spare count as weight reduction?

do the fans come on when the ac is off? once the engine get hot?

and check the front of the radiator, really the a/c condenser, they can get clogged up with dirt or bugs. degreaser and a hose from inside to the outside will help clean the dirt and bugs out if you see any of that.

I'll be checking the water pump and radiator today. Scotty, the fans come on without ac at about 219, they cool it slightly but not a lot.

penright, it would stay cool when the weather was cool but when it's hot it wouldn't cool all the way down.

We figured it out though, when I went to pull it into the garage today, it seemed like it was running only 5 cylinders so we pressure checked the radiator again, wasn't holding at all, so we broke it down and started pressure checking the cylinders. One of the cylinders in the back was only hitting half the pressure of the others. Started tearing it down and on the way we find a busted LIM gasket and of course the head gasket too.
Lesson learned: keep your coolant fresh and flushed. It had built up in the water ports and completely clogged two, probably caused the car to start running hotter in the first place.

Pretty hard to blow a headgaskets, but getting it overheated more than a few times and it bound to happen.

those clogged cooling ports where the lim meets the head will make it run hot for sure.

you may want to take that head in to a shop to be gone over since its off. or both of them.

or just find a top swap and put that back on. insert evil laugh here__________ lol
