I recently replaced my power steering pump and lines. While doing this I must have punctured my inner CV boot. There is grease slung all around the engine.

Should I replace just the boot or the whole shaft?

155,000 miles on OE axel. No issues mechanically on the axel.

you have to take the axle apart to change the boot, same as rebuilding it. so putting a new axle in is a hell of a lot easier, you can search you tube for how to rebuild a axle, it dont look like fun at all.

Replace the whole thing. Quicker and easier.

Ok so here is my new dilemma. Looks like the boot might have been leaking due the new power steerig line rubbing on it. I cleaned up the boot and cannot find any tears. Maybe the line rubing on the seal of the boot made it seap.

Now my return PS line has rubbed down. Not leaking but thin. How should I reinforce this so it doesn't cause future issues.

    1) cut and add filter in line

    2) reinforce with hose slightly larger than with clamps. Is there any addhesive to put in between to create a seal?

the return line has very little pressure in it, so it may be ok.

or you could cut and use a fitting and clamps to cut it off at that part, then run the new hose to the pump.

Sometimes you won't find a tear, or hole, but when spinning the grease will come out none-the-less...

Boot kit costs about 1/2 what a new axle does and will require more work. You must remove and replace the axel and replace the boot and repack the grease. Also, if there is a tear and dirt got into the axel it's not worth it, IMO.

I would order a new axel here...

    Halfshafts

New axle, warranty, no core fee and new nut... Is what I use.

    Good luck!

Since the PS return line was not leaking only worn down I ended up getting a slightly larger hose. Split it down the middle and lined it with black RVT.

I put it around the worn section and clamped it with 4 hose clamps. Hopefully that will reinforce it for long term.

As for the boot, I jut bought a new shaft and put it in. Hope that the GP is done for a while with issues.

    Hello all...
2003 GT, in the process of purchasing CV Half shafts (Rock Auto). I've read this has been posted a few times, so at the risk of redundancy, what Axels are commended now? I've read that reman's are best because they often use OEM/GM materials. Or, Is the Cardone Select a good choice now? I see mixed results from both..

    Thanks

    Thanks..
Are the Napa's new or remans', or do they come in both? So, I should stick with new CV's as opposed to remans'?

This is rather recent that I replaced mine.. Napa here.. I was able to get a new passenger side without a problem.. Now I tried to get a new driver side.. But apparently it was no longer available just the remanuf one. Tried at two different locations. Now they do offer a remanuf one with a hd boot (only passenger side was available for the gtp).. I grabbed one of those as well but personally wasn't impressed and the non hd boot seemed that it'll last longer.. And the the warranty for the non hd boot remanuf ones lasted longer. So I ended up just getting both remanuf.

I suggest you stop by your local Napa and see what they have on hand or what they can get. Originally reserved the one I wanted online and got a call later that those were no longer available so I ended up just stopping by and seeing what was available

    HI

    2001 grand prix
Tried installing a cv axle today. I thought it seated in trans, but apparently it did not. Left me stuck on side of road after about 3 miles.
First, how do you seat them?
Second, Did I ruin transmission if the axle slipped out?
Third, how can I tell if new axel is still good?

    thank you,
