Alright I want to go cam but I want to get a cam that has a good HP boost and will be a good candidate for a turbo. Don't know too much about camshafts so is the higher the lift the better?

see what others have used and with what sort of success.
Looks like I'm going to buy the stattam 5 Turbo cam. Go big or go home. That things a monster cam. The install will probably suck though. Lifters, cam, and double roller timing chain.

if you want to go big, you could get a custom ground cam if you do some head work
When I started looking to cam my engine, I googled cam numbers explained..just keep researching and you'll get a better understanding of what a cam does, what the spec. numbers mean, and which one best suits your build goal.![]()
Since its the internet, you'll get a lot of conjecture.
I was thinking about getting a cheap motor from Ed Morad (morad parts). Would it probably be easier to build this on a stand and then swap the motor into the car? I've never done lifters or a cam. The most I've done is help Bill with my headers. So I was thinking about getting a cheap engine stand (duralast one for $100 at autozone) to build it on. And then a cheap crane. That way I keep my daily and build this in the garage. Also what should I tell Ed that I'm looking for? Or will it not matter since I'm rebuilding the whole thing?

On learning about cams. Read until your eyes bleed a few times and you'll know more than most here. From there you can gauge what times people have run with various setups and how things have idled etc. Read the turbo sections on the forums and see what issues etc people have had. This is the way I research things when I have questions or am interested in something different.
On the lifters, timing chain etc etc. All those things are easy, look at each as individual steps and it really is simple. The first part of the build is to remove the intake and valve covers. Then pull the rockers, remove the pushrods (just sitting there once rockers are removed. Four more bolts and you use a magnet to help get the lifters up. Or if you have relatively low mileage..remove teh rockers, push rods and leave the lifters in...put the motor upside down and they'll be out of your way.
I have a decent 4 wheel engine stand that came from Harbor Freight ~$50 during one of their nearly daily sales. Engine hoise ~$150.
Are there any write ups on how to install a camshaft? Except I'm doing mine on an engine stand.

remove lifters, balancer, cover, timing set, cam.
Install cam, gears, timing set, make sure its lined up, timing cover, balancer, put together top end, explode a timing set or lifters or something cool.
Last step optional, but expected.
I would get the turbo, a built transmission and then a cam. That way you can slowly work your way up. It's going to be one big chunk of change sitting around on engine stands or waiting to go into the car, you won't be able to run a st5 turbo setup without a $2,000-3,500 transmission in it. You may find that the turbo alone on a fwd setup is plenty of power anyway, or that it's too much money for a fwd car anyhow.
I understand where you're comming from. But I'm doing this to learn and prove to myself that I can finish what I've always envisioned. To finish something I've told myself I can do and to do it. It may just be a Grand Prix but I feel its more personal then going and purchasing a Corvette or something else. You can see those everywhere there not even that special anymore cause just about every old geezer has one. But their all stock which is ok except that's all they are just stock! I want to build a monster and that's what I've set out to do.

I'm tearing down my engine now, vacuum and oil leaks like crazy! With that said, I'm going to rebuild with a cam of course. Have you got any good insight? I have no idea where to start...
