1997 Grand Prix SE. 2 days ago the temp started climbing after I replaced the air intake housing that holds the MAF sensor. I think its the throttle body. (I changed from a 98 Grand Prix GT for the new style MAF sensor). I checked the thermostat and it was stuck shut. That seems to fix it and it was running cool around 150 - 210. Replaced and today i started it and after about 2 mins of driving 45 MPH it blew out the thermostat seal and i could hear it releasing pressure for a few seconds after that. The temp at that point was over 210. Once it blew the seal it stayed around 150. The water pump is working and it was circulating through the entire system. Any ideas on what that could be?

did you bleed the air out of the lim via the bleeder screw a top the t stat housing?

and dont think you can just change mafs with out tuning for it. if the part# are the same you should be ok, (its the number on top of the maf) but if not it may not be working right.

throttle bodys you can change but the maf not so much.

when i bleed the coolant system i like to leave the cap off the rad, and let it idle till the fans come on, that way you know the t stat is open. then bleed it, top it off and cap it.

do this with the a/c off, the a/c will turn the fans on.

I don't have a/c and ya i bleed out the air while it was idling and added coolant until it was full. old maf sensor was part# ending in 04 new one was ending in 05. car runs alot better with the new one and ran like crap with the old one.

but did you wait till the fans came on? the t state wont open till the about the time the fans come, 1/2 way on my regal temp gauge.

t stats a 195, fans come on at like 214 or so.

you could have been bleeding it to soon.

maybe your temp gauge is a bit off and it is hot enough?

you can always remove the t stat, and pour coolant right into the lim from the hole, that way your pretty full, and then put the hose and housing back on and fill the hose, put it back on the rad, top off and re bleed it.

you can also take the t stat out and drop it in a pot of boiling water to see if it does open up. or the lighter trick.

    1997 SE 3800's MAF's are all the same for the GT/GTP 97-03.

Everything '99-'03 though...throttle body wise wouldn't work without a tune or a swapped PCM, but since you're '97...your PCM is year specific....and your transmission is also vacuum powered as well.

so far i have found 2 versions of the maf sensor. yes i did modify it it for the transmission vacuum. i don't understand what your trying to say there blueguy. are you saying to put my old on back in? the one that was in this 98 gt has the large hole that went all the way into the housing (and that the same style my gtp has) and my old one had a small hole about 1.5 in deep and bottomed out in a cast housing. which i did replace new but didn't help.

On the other note about overheating, could it have been attrib to my my air intake changeover? also gonna change my seal again and wait longer to bleed the thermostat housing.

my guess is when you took off the TB and then the t stat air got trapped and has yet to come out.

or the temp sensor has gone bad or something loopy. if the temp sensor is not working right the fans will come on at the wrong time.
