Ive seen a # of threads about throttle body cleaning - they are a bit vague on exact process so I wanted to confirm the following:

    1. Do you need to remove the throttle body in order to clean it? Can you just remove the rubber housing, tilt the butterfly opening and spray/tooth brush clean what you can reach? Does anything need to dry before starting the car?
    2. Do you need to remove any sensors prior to cleaning a Series III motor (The MAF is near the filter box and not near the TB)?
    3. If I need to remove the TB is there anything specific that I need to know?

Don't be a sissy and remove the throttle body to clean it properly.
Try to not get to much cleaner in/around the motor.
Check the sealing surfaces and replace gasket.
    Cleaner evaporates quickly.

do not disconect the electrical connection or you will need to do a TB relearn,
Do not move the butterfly plate by hand, you can screw up the throttle actuator module
have someone turn the key to on but not start it and press on the gas pedal
    thats about it

There are three reasons why a relearn procedure must be performed.

    1. Turning the key on or starting the car with the motor connector removed
    2. PCM reset
    3. Throttle body replacement

You will not be doing any of these three whilst removing/cleaning your throttle body.

Here is the relearn procedure just in case (really simple):

    1. Reset PCM by pulling PCM fuse (underhood) for a few seconds.
    2. With A/C turned off, start car and immediately put it in Drive with your foot on the brake.
    3. If the car does not start initially, keep trying WITHOUT putting your foot on the accelerator.
    4. Let the car idle in gear for at least 5 and no more than 7 minutes.
    5. Shut off the car for 10 seconds.
    6. Start engine, place in drive and let idle for 5 minutes.
    7. Shut off engine.
    8. Idle is learned.

Ok - just to be sure from all the info on here - I do *not* need to take the TB to do a cleaning - I can just have someone hold down the throttle to open the actuator and spray. No sensor removal or such required?

    Correct

So you're willing to spray all of that crap into the UIM?

Why not remove it and clean it correctly?

I havent found a good writeup on how to remove the TB on the L26 engine. There are a ton of writeups on the L36 TB removal. It appears if I do something wrong I could screw things up pretty badly. Your msg is the first Ive seen about harming the UIM if I just spray the TB cleaner in without removal - thats a good piece of info I havent seen on any other site.

Its also noted above that if I disconnect any of the electrical connectors that I need to do a TB relearn - removing the TB means disconnecting everything?

There are alot of threads on this subject but I havent really found a good DIY writeup w/pics for the L26 motor for newbies.

Looking at it from above as an amateur it looks like I could screw something up badly

Excellent - thanks! I dont have any Miller High Life, hopefully I can switch parts for that step and still be successful

Basically cleaning the MAF, TB, and replacing the sparks/plugs and Ive completed the 'tune up' steps?

I finally got around to cleaning my TB this morning per the instructions in the link above.

It was pretty easy and took about 30 minutes. It was filthy inside. I disconnected everything and removed the TB, cleaned it, put everything back together with no problems. My GP idles about 200 rpm lower that before the cleaning and it appears to run a bit smoother as well.
