It's time for an oilchange. Yes, I know how to change my oil. Thing is I usually use Penzoil High Mileage 10w40 with ACDelco filter, but I was considering K&N filters and maybe Royal Purple? A friend of mine swears by them and I'm wondering if it's worth the price.

Also, someone mentioned using a different size filter for some sort of benefit and I was curious as to what that entails. Any opinions?

    Why are you running 10W-40?

Do you have an oil pressure issue?

On filters, Delcos are pretty cheap (in quality) filters.

Fram XG, KN, Mobil 1, Amsoil are all good filters.

    Unsure on royal purple filters.

You can use a longer filter, that increases the amount of oil in the system by a small bit. No modifications are needed.

I usually run whichever filter is on sale. Most of the time its either a K&N or a Mobil 1 filter.

Full synthetic 10w-30 is the stuff to use. Again, it's usually Mobil 1 ($15 for a 5 quart on sale) but this last oil change I got Castrol Edge full synthetic...supposed to be some super dooper awesome-o oil. 5 quarts and a filter for $21...

Royal purple is good stuff, but I honestly don't see the need to pay the extra.

    Oil is oil?

But 10w40 is not really needed.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a worse filter than a Delco. Use anything else. I use Fram XG (Now Fram Ultra) because it's the best compromise between price and performance for me, and they sell at Walmart where I buy my Walmart SuperTech synthetic oil - one stop shopping.
Irridium spark plugs last 100k mi and work just as well as copper. Copper is a waste on N/A and only lasts 15k mi. Don't use Platinum.
Use 195* tstat unless you can thoroughly explain why not; 99.9% don't need a lower temp.
Almost any oil filter, ever, is of higher quality than ACDelco. Spend $6+.

Would you trust an oil filter that uses pure glue as an end cap?

Wow, everyone's recommending Fram? When I'm not asking everyone seems to be bashing them
Anyway, 10w40 is really just habit. It's what my grandfather always used and after doing some research I didn't see a problem following suit. Is there really a big difference? Would I be better off with 10w30?
Since there's still controversy between ACDelco and Fram I may just go with K&N filter. Everyone seems to agree on those

I think myself and slow are about the only people who will recommend a fram on here.

The ultra provides better filtration, uses an extra thick can and metal end caps. Oh and it costs less than a KN/mobil (the premium champion labs filter).

Napa Gold 1096 for long. I think 1042 is short.

I've used Fram and ACDelco, didn't notice any difference. Of course, both times my old 3100 died it was with a Fram filter, but I'm pretty sure that was coincidence.

Is there any benefit to using the longer filter?

    Yes, more capacity.

But it can also be a hazard, if your engine mount fails it will crush the oil filter on the subframe and possibly lose oil.

K&N HP1001 oil filter and Valvoline SynPower High-Mileage full synthetic 5/30 or 10/30. It's expensive, but it'll set you right. I'm now about 7-9,000 between oil changes.

    BE AWARE.

If you plan on using the 4300 Vortec filter, you need to have a non-failing lower engine and transmission mount.

If they are crushed, torn, shredded and need replaced, then all that is going to happen is crush that filter...get a PF47 if you have bad lower mounts.

Or, put new lower mounts in and go with the 3980.

I'm an Amsoil nutswinger. I've used a lot of the oils and filters you guys are talking about. The delco ones suck for filtration. Your car will start to burn oil over time with royal purple. Mobil 1 and M1 filters are a good combo but won't last much longer than your standard oil change interval. I use Amsoil XL synthetic in my daily with an EA023 filter. I use Amsoil signature synthetic in my race car with an EA023 filter and it stays cleaner longer. Those filters an oil combos work great for extended intervals.
