Custom cai

I know, I know it has been discussed that an open cone filter ( my current set up) put since I'm N/A I want the intake air to be a little cooler. With that being said I plan on making a box like this http://www.grandprixforums.net/custom_cai.php
But I will enclose of the entire box with two holes in it, one for the filter and one for a fresh air feed (kinda like a ram air design) and can be seen here ClubGP Message Forum troubleshooting
I will also be insulating the box with the bags you would find at grocery stores (like Sam's club) which keeps hot things hot and cold things cold to prevent lots of heat soak into the box.
Just wanted to know your thoughts and comments on this build.
If this is a stupid thing let me know.

IMO it is not a stupid idea, it's a good idea to build this box or more generally just to use a cold airbox. This one seems like a lot of work and somewhat costly, albeit nice. I was looking into this same box about two months ago and the polycarbonate sheet was going to cost around about $80 to my door.

I'm not sure that insulating with plastic bags is a good idea, however. I don't really know how you plan to do this....will there be bags inside the box? That would be bad because they will tend to be sucked toward the filter. The thin plastic isn't providing the best thermal barrier anyway. You could probobly use 1/4" thermal insulation quite sucessfully.

Edit: If your time is worth something you might be better off waiting for a used Wizaired box.

Well I am glad that you don't think it is that dumb and I know it will be a little spendy but spending 100 bucks for a intake that I will make doesn't seem bad because when I work on my car it keeps me away from doing dumb stuff.
And as for the bags its not a plastic bag by any means. I tried to find a picture but can't find it right now but it looks like its metal because it is an insulated bag.

I would just slap a cone onto the throttle body and be done with it. If you want to fiddle around with it go ahead, as long as you post pictures.

Thats exactly what mine is. With a heat shield wrapped around the sides.

Thats what I am going for but it doesn't seem like there is a fresh air feed like I am planning and it isnt fully enclosed. I will also be insulating the entire box. But now I know what it should look like.

I wouldn't bother until I've finished all of the more useful mods... headers, 1.9 rockers, hv3, tune. The performance difference between your current setup and planned setup should be negligible.

I came to the same conclusion. I am getting tired of my Wizaired box and wanted to make the polycarbonate box but I was really surprised when I priced it out. I used the dimensions in that writeup to make a mold from thick cardboard (illustration board). I am planning to then use fiberglass to make the box. I may use a sheet of tinted lexan for the lid, or to keep it cheap do that out of fiberglass too.

So...get 4" piping and run it into the fender...that silly little box still gets heatsoaked since the exhaust pipe is RIGHT NEXT TO IT. Also...in order for it to void your warranty they have to prove your modifications was the reason WHY that part failed. HV3...they can't see it. Rockers...they aren't going to be able to tell if they are modded 1.9 ratio ones...You can get PEM's...they can't tell with those on their either...And a 3" catted bolt in downpipe isn't going to void ANYTHING.

The fender currently has the HID ballasts in it so that could be a problem. The box wont get super heat soaked if I can get the insulation correct, it will also have the fresh air feeder to get cooler air into it. I really want to do the HV3 insert but was scared it would void my warranty plus I suppose it is easily reversible. How can't you tell if they are 1.9 ratio rockers?

They look just like stock because they are basically stock. You'd have to remove one and put it side by side with a stocker and really look. This is the stealership we're talking about. They aren't doing that, haha.

Honestly do you think a dealership is going to notice a chunk of poly in your UIM? Doubt it. And all modded 1.90:1 Rockers are...ARE stock factory rockers...they just modify and reweld the pedistal to increase the ratio from 1.60:1. So...they look bone stock.
