Shot a video for you gearheads to help me..lol. Trying to figure out if this is a rod knock or wtf is making the awful noise? I checked the harmonic balancer but the rubber seems to be intact. Any thoughts on what this is or what else I should check? I hope to god it's not a rod knock though.. Anyways, here's the video.. Thanks in advance

I'm guessing rod knock. Check your oil too, if it has a sparkle to it that means the rod bearing went and put metal shaveing all up in the oil.

I haven't got the cars back to my place yet.. I traded my cbr900rr sport bike for 2 GP GT's, a L67 engine(without supercharger), and a Suzuki 250r quad.. I'm picking them up Sunday afternoon so I will be working on the cars then.. Both cars have this noise but the other one is MUCH louder then what this one is..

Once I get the cars back to my garage, I will check the oil for metal flakes. What's involved in replacing the bearings, if thats the case? I'm not the greatest with mechanical stuff but my brother is ASE certifified and will be helping me with this project

You will not be able to replace bearings only. You'll need either new motors or to send those out to a machine shop to be rebuilt.

Doing only bearings will almost always result in very few miles of happiness before the sound returns with vengenance.

hey billboost37, are you sure that its not a good idea to just replace all bearings, crank, and possibly a rod if damaged.

I can only speak from the experiences I've had or read about. From that info...I'm positive that I would recommend against it. At the same time though, surely there is someone in the world that has had some success w/o doing a full rebuild. There's always an exception to any rule in life.

thats the plan for my grand prix. spun two rod bearings. i dont wanna buy another motor cause i wont know the condition of anything in it. all parts should be around 350 for my fix and i think its a lot better than paying 500-700 for one that could be near its end

Because this is a newish thread-and this is a slightly relevant question-
Is there any guides to removing these motors and replacing? I am buying a grand prix with a similar knock and will be dropping a new motor in it but would like to do it myself to save $.

Probably somewhere on here. Hit up the search feature and see what comes up. I'm sure its been detailed at some point.

When I tore it down I found that the rod bearings were shot allowing the piston to slap causing the knocking. Got all new pistons and connecting rods, bearings, crankshaft, and had the cylinder walls cleaned up. Rebuilt engine has about 6k on her now and is running great.

As far as removal, its not hard at all. I had the engine pulled and tore apart in a few hours. That's with a couple of runs to the fridge for beer. Just make sure all sensors, clips, and harnesses are undone and out of the way. Take off the passenger tire and splash guard to access the power steering pump lines and a few connectors. My tranny was fine but I removed everything just so I could clean up the engine bay and decrease the tranny so everything looked good. Just take your time and make sure you bag and label ALL sensors and bolts. Makes reinstalling much easier.
