I have a 2000 Pontiac GP GT K engine and it misfires intermittently at idle and while driving and most notably in fourth gear when the lock-up converter is engaged. I tuned up the engine with new wires, plugs(autolight), coils. Ran numerous bottles of injector cleaner through the tank, ran dry gas thinking there might be water in the tank and changed the gas filter. The cat has been removed about a year ago, it broke and was ratteling. I Replaced the EGR valve about a year ago for a similar problem. The engine has 200,000 miles on it and runs very well, no oil burning at all and is very strong. It has a fresh air intake on it and that is about it for mods. The engine will miss at idle in park and the tach gage will fluctuate from 700rpm to 1200rpm. The misfire is very pronounced in forth gear while lock-up is on. Im thinking maybe a partial clogged injector or may the EGR is malfunctioning, or maybe the body computer, it seem like its affecting all injectors, almost like its cutting out for a split second and this occurs while the engine is hot. I just dont know where to go next? I dont want it to turn into a money pit by replacing everthing with a hit or miss deal. I only had one code for the cat flow, forgot the code number but was because I removed the cat. Any help will be greatly appreciated...Thanks...Tom

know anyone with a scanner that can look to see which cylinders are misfiring?

did the misfire happen before or after the tune-up of plugs and wires?

these questions follow if you say the misfire happended after the tune-up:

what kind of wires did you buy?

what kind of autolite plugs did you buy? and how did you gap them?

I do own a scanner and no codes for misfire are present. The misfire was present before I did the tune, thats why I did the tune in the first place. I did have a bad coil which threw a code about a month ago and thats why I replaced all the coils, it took a lot of the miss away, but a slight miss is still there. I was wondering if the bad coil could of zapped the ingition control module located under the coil packs? I seen this happen before as I was a mechanic for 20+ years, but its very rare and only seen it happen twice in 20 years. The reason why I think it might be the ignition control module is that it feels like it affects all cylinders where the engine cuts for a split second. Anyway this miss is driving me crazy and will not stop till its fixed! Oh all the tune-up stuff is Autolight and plug gaps are stock specs. Hey thanks for responding Warbeaver, any help is appreciated...Tom

Just for the fun of it I unplugged the EGR valve and would you believe it that it took most of the miss away. The EGR valve is not even a year old but the fourth gear lock up condition is gone and how can the EGR come on at idle? It felt like it would open for a split second and close, that would explain the erratic idle fluctuating between 750 and 1200 RPM. Is it possible that the new EGR is bad or is the computer giving it a command?

did u look at the EGR where the valve opens? if that is stuck or has carbon built up on it, it could cause issues.

Warbeaver thanks for your suggestions, but I was totally out thinking this problem, it was so simple. I decided to give it one last shot before I brought it to a garage to have it repaired. I decided to change the spark plugs and they were still under warranty. I took all the plugs out and checked all the wires for ohms and got like 4.3ohms on each wire, looks good and all the plugs look good. I got to the last wire on the number 6 cylinder and noticed that the protective black wire protector had melted to the oxygen sensor sticking up out of the exhaust manifold on the back of the engine. The wire was actually stuck to the oxygen sensor, I peeled it off and checked it, it was around 4.3 ohms. So I wrapped it with a heat tape and electrical tape on top of that, so it is really protected now from the oxygen sensor which sticks up right infront of that plug and almost touches the plug boot and wire. I put everything back together and it ran perfect, strong as hell! Im so stoked and now I can get on with my life...lol, this was really buggin the **** out of me...problem solved!
