I have a 00 GP GT that i recently did intake gaskets on. After the repair the car ran great for 2 weeks then developed a bad lower end knock. Fearing the worst i took it in for a 2nd opinion and without a pan drop my mechanic is telling me that #6 rod bearing is bad. Wondering if this can easily be replaced by dropping the pan and if i should worry about the rest of the lower bearings or not. The car was not run long with this knock, maybe 20 minutes so im hoping the journal isnt banged up. I am a backyard mechanic just wondering if this is a task easily done w/ out a lift, and some opinions on reliability after this is done.

to drop the pan you need to lift the motor up to get the lower motor mount off and out of the way. i wouldnt just replace on bearing either.

I'd recommend doing all the bearings, yes. Along with buying better than stock bearings; Clevite.

hmm odd replace the part thats broke and it doesnt go away......this motor has to be replaced as im finding out from talking to mechanics and info on here....so my next question is how much time does it take to go out w/ the old and in with the different, salvage yard motors are plentiful around me and i think thats the route im gonna end up doing

if you know what your doing you can swap a motor in these cars in an afternoon. if its your first time it could probably be done in a weekend.

ok ive decided to go ahead and do the swap myself, i found a used motor out of a 98 regal with 120k on it that had an engine compartment fire. 400 bucks with a year warranty, i pulled the intake off cleaned it all up, im going to use that motors lower intake and the upper off my old motor since its only a month old. I put the lower on already, i just have a few questions,
    1. Should i get a new upper plenum gasked or is this one ok?
    2. How do i know i put enough silicone on the 4 corners of the LIM?
thanks guys this forum is a big help
00 GT, ams lube and filter, funeral for stock motor on 5/27/10, replaced with 98 L36 with new lim gaskets this time

i normally put a dab under the corners before the gaskets go on then a dab after putting the gaskets on and make sure you put a dab on your lower intake bolts that go in the water jacket if your unsure which ones go in water jacket put it on all of them this will keep oil and water from seeping up the bolts over time and reuse ur upper gasket it will be fine

Why waste the money on a Series III block when are all virtually the same?

rods are stronger which apparently counts for something in an M90 build haha.

Meh...the pistons always go before the rods.

Note the second half of my last post being the part where I laugh sarcastically at the idea of rods being important in a 3800 build
