I picked up some synthetic motor oil today and I spent quite a bit of time looking at filters. For the first time I see a synthetic oil filter, priced twice that of the "midrange" one I ended up buying. I did not buy the synthetic oil filter for several reasons but I am wondering what peoples opinion on it is. Is it just a gimick, or should it be used with synthetic oil. Last time i used synthetic there was no such filter so I read and read but am not comvinced of the necesity.

lots of good info on filters. I prefer mobil 1 filters myself. If Amsoil was easier to come by I'd use them.

I've been a fan of WIX filters for years now. I've used a few Mobil 1 and K&N filters. I prefer the K&N because of the nut. I have bad arthritis and it makes it hell taking a filter off for me.
the last two filters I bought for both my GP and wife's saturn vue were purolator PureONE filters which were half the price of Mobil 1 and get great reviews.
IMO any filter NOT made by fram should be acceptable

Mobil1 or AC Delco PF52's (IIRC) the one for the 4.3 Vortec V6 used in the Bravada/Blazer/Jimmy...I used them and they work great since they are bigger they filter better than the smaller PF47's which are the OEM replacement.

I’ll try to answer your question, since no one else seems to have. IMHO, yup, it is kind of a scam. They imply that synthetic oil is to be used with a synthetic media filter to get an extra couple bucks out of you. However, to the best of my knowledge oil filters have been tested compatible with synthetic oil for years. But I do believe that synthetic media is slightly better for the people who choose to do extend oil change intervals.Originally Posted by echarleswhyte

Expensive side: Mobil1/K&N – they are the same filter, from personal experience the anti-drain back functions superior to most filters
Mid range: The Pure One – a great filter at any price
Cheap side: what ever the absolute cheapest filter you can find because it will probably work just fine. How can every oil change shop in the nation be wrong!
On a side note, some filters like AC Delco used to be good in the past. But these days there are not that many different manufactures, but they come in many different boxes to throw us off.

well, thanx for the response. what I ended up with is Quaker State synthetic oil (on sale) and I bought, did not have much of a choice only ones were various Fram filters, regular, tough gaurd and the synthetic one, Qauker State filter and the house brand. I decided (again money wise) on the mid range Quaker State filter. Never had any issues (that I know about lol) with the basic Fram filter in the past, mind u I have never run an extended oil change schedule so I guess I will see

well, I just read the article and, well, I guess Quaker State was nto a good buy. got another question now, what will happen (never done it before) if I remove the filter without draining the oil? never done just filter change before so I am curious if it will drain or will i just loose that which is in the filter

i dont think you will lose very much oil. The filter sits higher than the oil pan. Maybe 1/2 a qt or so that was in the filter will be lost.
BTW, I have used Napa gold filters for over 15 yrs.
