I am Having Problems with my fuel gauge in my 2000 Grand Prix GT, i pulled the pump out and checked it with a Ohm Meter and when i move the float up and down the Ohm meter goes up and down and its working properly and when i start it the gauge shoots to Full and about 30 seconds pass and it drops down to E and the low fuel light comes on. I bought the car wrecked and the guy said it was like that for a real long time before i got it. i have been going by the fuel used on the digital read out on the dash. any ideas??

The rheostat on the float assembly is dead. The float unclips from the side of the fuel pump assembly and can be replaced. What happens is sulfur from the gas eats at the contacts on the rheostat and loses contact.

Mine was acting the same way as yours was on my 01 GT. I bought a new float from gmpartsdirect.com and replaced it. Works like a charm.

Same thing on my gtp. Tested everything I could, but had to buy a new one. I still think its the whole assembley, runs like 200 or so. I just delt with it until I found a used on for $60.

No need for a whole fuel pump. The float is all you need to buy, and is sold seperately. Runs about 90 dollars.

Yea its the float, its also a common problem on the gm trucks those years as well as other w body vehicles, just be lucky it didnt happen on a truck cause doing it yourself on a truck sucks and having it done by somone is even worse cause it costs a pretty penny i had it happen to me on an 2001 silverado a few years back. I havent had the time yet to fix my gp though i do have the part, but you'll be happy to know that the fuel used gauge is correct within about 2 tenths of a gallon so you can use that until you get a new one. Just remember you have a 17.5 gallon tank and do the math.

My car does something similar, and I'm going to bet it's the float from what I'm reading here so I will look into that and replace it thanks for this thread!

My Fuel Used has been off as much as .5 gallon... I ran outta gas @ 17 ... It's the only thing I have to go off of once my tank get below 5/8...

Can't remember what post I saw this in but watch the 3 vids starting here. He says to order part number 15824379. Not bad for around $40.
