Hey everyone, just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a weird problem in my 02 Grand Prix GT. I recently had remote start installed, which I think has to do with the problem.
The car starts normally with the key or remote start, but shuts off after a few seconds of running. It doesn't chug, it ran be revved, put into gear- anything I want for 1.8 seconds before it shuts off.
Called Best Buy where I had it installed and they couldn't find anything wrong, only guess was the keys became "unprogrammed". So he suggested having a locksmith come to program the keys again, to see if that's it. Is there any way to program a key without having the locksmith come? I don't have any other spares, just the two involved in remote/key starting.
I checked the air filter, mass air flow and tried resetting the battery.
I don't know what it could be if it's not related to the remote start, but any suggestions from anyone would be great. Thanks

As far as programming keys goes, I'd call the dealer and see what kind of information they can give.

Did BB splice any wires when installing your remote start? I would look under the steering column for a splice and start from there.

93 CTD - more slow, less rust

Steps 1-3 are not needed start on 4.
    4. Put emergency brake on to disable daytime running lights (this step is required!)
    5. Make sure all doors trunk and hood are closed leave driver window down and reach in threw window
    6. Try to start. If it doesn't start, leave the key in the on position for 10 min on 97-03 cars and 15 min for 04 and newer cars. The security light should turn off after this amount of time.
    7. Turn off ignition for 3 seconds
    8. Try and start the car. It probably won't start. Repeat step 5 two more times.
    9. If this doesn't work disconnect battery for 5 seconds and then try and start the car.

If that doesnt work, try this one:

    1. Disconnect battery for 10 sec.
    2. Reconnect battery
    3. Turn key to ON position
    4. Do not try to start vehicle, just quickly click to RUN position to engage security light
    5. Let vehicle sit with key ON for 35 min.
    6. Attempt to crank vehicle. Once vehicle is running, the security light may still be on
    7. If security light is still on, turn key to OFF position for 5 sec.
    8. Turn key to ON position and security light should turn off
    9. Start vehicle and enjoy

I certainly hope you can get the problem resolved, unfortunately it sounds like your security system doesn’t like the remote start. I have read many accounts of similar issues; it seems that installing an after market remote start is nearly impossible to do cleanly. You can do it, I know people have, but they all seem to lose some sort of functionality either with their car or the new system.

Ten years of continuous driving excitement and counting!
