Thread: Car dies at idle or low speeds

My 98 GP dies when i'm idling to a stop sign or whatever or at low speeds the guy i just baought it from said it's probably the EGR valve but I just had someone else in it any they said it might have something to do with the throttle sensor. I'm not sure what to replace or what else it could be.

do a tune up and check for vac. leaks and clean the MAF.

Generally speaking, the sensors: mass air flow sensor, both oxygen sensors, manifold absolute pressure sensor, throttle position sensor, etc... can have a significant effect on how your car idles. But, unless your car is setting a check engine light code specifically pertaining to a single sensor, you should check everything you can.

Sometimes these stalling problems can be caused by a bad crankshaft position sensor, Typically there are more obvious signs if this is indeed the problem: i.e. a whacked out RPM gauge.

The throttle position sensor is mounted on the throttle body, as is the idle air control valve. If you think the throttle body area presents a problem, make sure the i.a.c. valve can operate without being completely clogged with carbon, like mine was. It cannot 'control idle air' if it can't move. Better yet, clean the entire throttle body.

Stalling may be caused by a compromised fuel delivery system. Rusted fuel lines, clogged fuel filters, bad fuel pressure regulator etc...

If you really believe you have a problem solely with the EGR valve, swap it out and install a new EGR valve gasket. Consider all angles on this one.

My 2001 GP started stalling at slow down and or idle. Just got it back from the fixer man. They put in a new IAC valve, showed me the old carbon coated one. Drove it less than 3 miles, and it stalled again. Took it back, typically, it would not stall with the mechanic with me. I asked if the valve had to adjust itself to the car. He said that's why he had test driven it twice after the install. Does anyone know if this is correct that they have to learn?

Started with 3/4 tank, slowly went down while being worked on. They found something. I changed the pvc just before trouble started, and I apparently (?) broke the sensor that sits on top of it. Probably when putting it back on? When they took it off it was in two pieces. Any way the car runs normally again. At least so far today.

erf- that sensor that sits on top of the PCV valve is the MAP sensor, and if it came off in 2 pieces then it's shot as you found out. Did that to mine once and it ran like junk. Replaced it and all is well. I think you're good to go.
